NAMCOR Hits Production Milestone at Kavango West-1X

Namibia’s Energy Future: Production Testing Begins at Kavango West-1X Discovery Well

Namibia’s National Petroleum Corporation (NAMCOR) has officially commenced production testing operations at the Kavango West-1X discovery well. This milestone represents a significant advancement for the nation’s onshore energy sector and underscores the potential of the Kavango Basin.

The exploration efforts are being conducted under Petroleum Exploration License (PEL) 73, a venture operated by ReconAfrica with a 70% stake. BW Kudu holds a 20% interest, and NAMCOR E&P participates with a 10% share. This strategic joint venture is designed to unlock the hydrocarbon potential of Namibia’s onshore Kavango Basin, a region attracting considerable attention for its geological prospects.

According to NAMCOR, all necessary regulatory approvals have been obtained, paving the way for the commencement of operations. Work crews are currently on-site, diligently preparing the Kavango West-1X well for the crucial testing phase.

Encouraging Technical Data and Extensive Testing Program

The Kavango West-1X well has already yielded promising technical data. Recent petrophysical analyses reveal an estimated 75 metres of net hydrocarbon pay within the Huttenberg formation, a revision upwards from previous assessments. This updated figure highlights the potential reservoir quality and hydrocarbon presence in the area.

The upcoming production testing program is comprehensive, targeting six distinct zones. These zones span both the Huttenberg formation and the deeper Elandshoek formations, encompassing a total prospective interval of approximately 345 metres. This extensive testing aims to thoroughly evaluate the flow rates and characteristics of the hydrocarbons present across these various geological intervals.

Production testing activities are projected to continue through the second quarter of 2026. NAMCOR has committed to releasing results as the operations progress, adhering to established industry practices for transparency and information dissemination.

NAMCOR’s Strategic Role and Commitment to Local Capacity Building

Mtundeni Ndafyaalako, Acting Managing Director of NAMCOR, expressed optimism regarding the development. “The commencement of production testing at Kavango West marks another important step in Namibia’s upstream journey,” he stated. “As NAMCOR, our role is to ensure that Namibia maintains a strategic seat at the table in these developments, while creating long-term value for the country.”

A key focus for NAMCOR in this project is the integration of local suppliers and service providers. “We are particularly encouraged by the integration of local suppliers into these operations, as building Namibian capacity remains central to sustainable industry growth,” Ndafyaalako added, emphasizing the commitment to fostering local expertise and economic participation.

Collaborative Approach to Exploration

NAMCOR reiterated its dedication to working collaboratively with its joint venture partners, relevant regulatory bodies, and all stakeholders. This cooperative approach is crucial to ensure that all exploration activities are conducted with the utmost regard for safety, efficiency, and in alignment with Namibia’s national priorities. The success of this project is seen as vital for the nation’s energy security and economic development.

The Kavango Basin is a frontier exploration area, and the results from the Kavango West-1X well are eagerly anticipated by the industry and the nation alike. The ongoing production testing represents a critical phase in determining the commercial viability of the discovered hydrocarbons and charting the future course of Namibia’s energy landscape.
