United Airlines Unveils Revolutionary “Relax Row” for Long-Haul Economy Travel
United Airlines is set to transform the long-haul economy experience with the introduction of its innovative “Relax Row” seating, slated to launch next year. This pioneering offering allows passengers to claim an entire row of three seats, which can be converted into a flat bed, providing an unprecedented level of comfort and space for travelers on extended journeys.

Enhanced Comfort and Amenities
Passengers opting for the Relax Row will be treated to a suite of amenities designed to enhance their journey. This includes high-quality mattress pads, cozy blankets, and a generous provision of two pillows. For families traveling with young children, United Airlines will also provide a special childcare kit, complete with a comforting stuffed toy to keep little ones entertained and at ease.
Fleet Expansion and Availability
The new Relax Row seats will initially be installed on United Airlines’ Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft. The airline has ambitious plans for this new seating configuration, with the goal of introducing it on 90 aircraft in the coming year. This rollout is expected to expand significantly, with over 200 aircraft slated to feature the Relax Row by 2030. Each aircraft will be equipped with up to 12 of these innovative seating arrangements, strategically positioned between the existing economy and premium economy sections.
A First for North American Airlines
This initiative marks a significant first for airlines operating in North America, setting a new benchmark for economy-class comfort. While specific pricing for the Relax Row has yet to be disclosed, comparisons can be drawn to similar offerings from other carriers. For instance, Air New Zealand’s “Skycouch” product, which allows a similar arrangement of three seats for shared use, is priced per row rather than per individual. One-way trips on the Skycouch can range from approximately US$1,100 to US$2,000, offering a reference point for the potential cost of United’s offering.
United Airlines emphasizes that the Relax Row is designed for passengers who seek the affordability of economy class but desire a substantial upgrade in comfort. This new seating option addresses a clear market need for more restful and spacious travel experiences on long-haul flights, without the premium price tag associated with business or first-class cabins. The airline anticipates that this will be a highly sought-after feature for a wide range of travelers, from solo adventurers to families seeking a more manageable journey.

This seating option is a first among North American airlines. Pricing has not yet been disclosed. However, Air New Zealand’s similar “Skycouch” seats are priced per row rather than per person. For one-way trips, a row costs between 1,100–2,000 US dollars (approximately 1.65 million–3 million Korean won).
