A Tragic Incident and Public Outcry
A victims’ rights advocate has expressed strong disapproval of a social media post by former Olympic cyclist Rohan Dennis, following his avoidance of jail for causing the death of his wife. Dennis, 35, received a suspended jail term in May last year after his wife, Melissa Hoskins, 32, was fatally struck by his vehicle near their home in Medindie, Adelaide’s inner north, on December 30, 2023.
Hoskins, who was also an Olympic cyclist, sustained serious injuries and passed away at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. The incident has sparked significant public concern and criticism, particularly after Dennis shared a post on Instagram that many found inappropriate.
Social Media Post Sparks Controversy
In a recent post to his Instagram account, Dennis shared an image of his Porsche, a different car, with the caption “what an absolute weapon.” This statement has been met with backlash from victims’ rights advocates, who find it deeply offensive given the circumstances.
Sarah Quick, the Victims’ Rights Commissioner, commented on the caption, stating, “This is a deeply offensive comment that demonstrates a clear lack of insight into the real and lasting impact of the harm he has caused.” She added, “It also reflects a profound lack of respect for Melissa and her family, who continue to live with the consequences of that harm every day.”
Dennis later posted a second image on Instagram featuring his children, accompanied by a similar caption: “Two absolute weapons.” These posts have further fueled public outrage and raised questions about his sensitivity towards the tragedy.
Legal Consequences and Sentencing
Despite the tragic outcome, Dennis pleaded guilty to committing an aggravated act likely to cause harm but was not held criminally responsible for his wife’s death. He was given a 17-month suspended prison term, along with a two-year good behaviour bond. Additionally, he was suspended from driving for two years.
During sentencing submissions in the South Australian District Court last year, Hoskins’ mother, Amanda, spoke about the impact of the incident on her family. She stated, “My daughter loved Dennis, and I know that you would never intentionally hurt her.” She also mentioned, “I believe this is a tragic accident. Your temper is your downfall and needs to be addressed.”
A Career Marked by Success
Before the tragic incident, Dennis had a successful career as a professional cyclist. He won two world titles in the road time trial and earned silver in the team pursuit at the 2012 Olympics. Additionally, he secured bronze in the road time trial at the Tokyo Olympics.
