Rising Death Toll in Turan Attacks
The death toll from the recent attacks on communities in Turan, Jato-Aka district of Kwande Local Government Area in Benue State has increased to 24. This comes after additional bodies were recovered on Saturday morning. The attacks, which occurred on Thursday, were carried out by suspected armed invaders targeting specific areas within the region.
Residents reported that the attacks focused on Mbaav community in Mbadura Council Ward and several settlements in Yaav Council Ward of Kwande LGA. According to our correspondent, the initial casualty count was 16 following separate morning and night attacks on the affected communities.
A former Supervisory Councillor of Kwande LGA, Akerigba Lawrence, stated that more bodies were discovered during search operations. He mentioned that some victims were thrown into the river, with one body recovered on Saturday morning, raising the total number of deaths to 24.
Lawrence listed the names of those killed in Mbaav community in Mbadura Council Ward, including Ushahemba Kaun, Assue Pever, Ijir Iorlu, Tyowase Terkimbi, Iorbee Tyoor, Iorkase Iber, Kungwa Adaa, Tyavbee Gbanger, and Aondoakula Ankaa. Victims from communities in Yaav Council Ward included Shagba Tyokase, Shagba Terese, Liambee Yohanen, Tordue Dooshima, Tordue Doover, Liambee Aondosoo, Azezamber Gyuse, and Terundu Tyozur. Several others remain unidentified as search efforts continue.
Six individuals who were injured during the attacks are currently receiving treatment at a nearby health facility. Residents mentioned that local search teams are still combing surrounding bushes and river banks, fearing that more casualties may be found.
Condemnation and Response
The killings have sparked strong condemnation from various leaders. The state chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Austin Agada, described the attacks as barbaric in a statement issued by his publicity secretary, Morgan Ihomun. He called for security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators.
Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia also condemned the killings, calling them senseless and unacceptable. The governor extended condolences to the families of the victims and assured residents of Kwande that his administration would intensify security operations to bring those responsible to justice and restore peace in the area.
Alia noted that over 400 security personnel had been recently deployed to Jato-Aka and surrounding communities. However, he acknowledged that further measures were necessary to end the recurring attacks.

Despite the deployment of security forces, the situation remains tense. Local communities are on high alert, with ongoing efforts to locate any remaining victims. Search teams continue their work, driven by the fear that more bodies might still be hidden in the dense bush or along the riverbanks.
The attacks have left deep scars on the communities, with many families mourning their lost loved ones. As the investigation continues, there is a growing demand for swift action from authorities to ensure justice and prevent future violence.
