The race to secure the next head coach for the Manly Sea Eagles has intensified, with a prominent figure from Parramatta Eels’ history throwing his hat into the ring. Nathan Cayless, a decorated former Eels captain and New Zealand Kiwis legend, has officially expressed his interest in taking the reins at Brookvale Oval.
Cayless brings a wealth of experience from his coaching journey, having served in assistant roles at the Sydney Roosters and the Wests Tigers. For the past four seasons, he has been the steadfast head coach of the Eels’ New South Wales Cup (NSW Cup) team, playing a crucial role in developing the club’s elite pathways system, a project closely aligned with the vision of Jason Ryles.
The Sea Eagles find themselves in a period of transition, having parted ways with Anthony Seibold just three games into the current season due to a disappointing start to their campaign. In the interim, veteran playmaker Kieran Foran has stepped into the head coaching role. However, his relative inexperience at the helm of an NRL club makes him an unlikely long-term candidate for the coveted position.
The revelation of Cayless’s candidacy emerged during a discussion on the popular rugby league program 100% Footy. Long-time Eels skipper Paul Gallen, who shared many years on the field with Cayless, confirmed the former captain’s ambition. Gallen highlighted Cayless’s extensive playing career, which saw him represent the blue and gold for 259 NRL games and captain the New Zealand Kiwis to a World Cup triumph, as a strong foundation for a head coaching role.
“He wants to go for it, he’s going to put his hand up for it,” Gallen stated on the show. “He’s been an assistant coach at Parramatta for a few years and done a fair bit with the Kiwis.”
Another Contender Emerges: Matt Ballin
Adding further depth to the coaching search, Queensland Maroons coach Billy Slater has publicly endorsed Matt Ballin as a strong candidate for the head coaching position. Ballin, a two-time premiership winner during his playing days, has been an integral part of Slater’s coaching staff for the Maroons in the State of Origin series. He also played a significant role as an assistant coach under Michael Maguire at the Brisbane Broncos, contributing to their drought-breaking premiership win last year.
Slater spoke highly of Ballin’s diverse coaching experiences. “He’s been at a number of different NRL teams, he’s seen different ways to coach and different ways to manage a group of men,” Slater commented on 100% Footy.
He elaborated on Ballin’s strengths, particularly his experience with elite talent: “And the State of Origin team, for that matter, you’re working with the best players. And you get a great understanding about bringing guys together in a short period of time.”
Slater concluded by emphasizing Ballin’s dedication: “The thing about Matt Ballin is he’s got a great passion for the game and a great want to be an NRL head coach. So I think he will certainly be in the mix.”
Cayless’s International Coaching Experience
Beyond his club commitments, Nathan Cayless has also contributed to the international rugby league scene. He served as an assistant coach to the New Zealand Kiwis for their Pacific Championship tournaments in 2024 and 2025.
