Labor’s $600M Politician Surge: “Not What We Need”

Parliament Size Under Review: Proposal to Expand Federal Representation Sparks Fierce Debate

Canberra is currently abuzz with discussions surrounding a significant proposal that could see the size of Australia’s federal parliament expanded by at least 40 Members of Parliament (MPs). This potential overhaul, which could add up to 14 senators and 28 representatives, has ignited a swift and stern reaction from the Coalition, particularly from Liberal leader Angus Taylor.

The Case for Growth: A Response to Population Boom

Senator Don Farrell, the Special Minister of State, has been spearheading consultations across the parliamentary spectrum regarding these potential changes. When questioned about the proposal during a recent National Press Club address, Senator Farrell alluded to a historical precedent, stating, “Growing the size of the Parliament is what great Labor leaders do.” He explained that the impetus for this review stems from Australia’s substantial population growth since the parliament was last expanded in 1984.

“Our population back then was 16 million,” Senator Farrell noted, highlighting the stark contrast with current figures. He further elaborated that parliamentary size is typically reassessed on a generational basis, roughly every 40 years. Citing historical examples, he pointed to former Labor prime ministers Bob Hawke and Ben Chifley, both of whom oversaw expansions in parliamentary numbers during periods of significant demographic expansion. However, Senator Farrell stressed that any concrete decisions would await the outcomes of a dedicated parliamentary inquiry tasked with thoroughly examining the arguments for increasing the number of MPs.

Coalition’s Strong Opposition: “Not What We Need Right Now”

The Coalition has voiced strong opposition to the proposed expansion. Liberal leader Angus Taylor, alongside Nationals leader Matt Canavan, has been vocal in their criticism.

“This proposal, which would cost over $600 million for taxpayers, for hardworking Australians, is not what we need right now,” Taylor declared. He articulated the Coalition’s perspective, stating, “Australians are in a cost-of-living crisis. They are in a fuel crisis. We have an economy that is not working for hard-working Australians, and the priority of this government appears to be increasing the size of Parliament. We don’t need more politicians. We need a government focused on the Australian people.”

The Coalition has proactively sought an independent assessment, requesting the Parliamentary Budget Office to cost a specific scenario involving the addition of 24 members to the House of Representatives and 14 new senators. This costing has placed the estimated price tag at over $600 million, with Taylor cautioning that the final expenditure could potentially be even higher.

Government’s Stance: Awaiting Inquiry Findings

A spokesperson for the Labor government has responded to the Coalition’s preemptive criticisms, suggesting they are “jumping the gun.” The government maintains that no definitive decisions will be made until the parliamentary inquiry has presented its findings and recommendations.

“This is clearly not about the policy or issues, it’s about the internal audition for attention in the Coalition,” the Labor spokesperson commented, implying that the Coalition’s reaction is politically motivated.

Despite the public outcry from the opposition, reports suggest that a number of Liberal MPs are quietly supportive of the idea of increasing the size of parliament, indicating a potential division within the Coalition on this issue. The parliamentary inquiry is expected to provide a comprehensive analysis of the demographic, representational, and financial implications of such an expansion, which will ultimately inform the government’s decision-making process. The debate over the optimal size of Australia’s federal parliament is set to continue as the nation grapples with its growing population and evolving needs.
