Donald Trump has championed the construction of a contentious £300 million ballroom at the White House, citing the upcoming state visit of King Charles III as a prime example of its necessity. The US president argues that such a facility is crucial for adequately hosting the significant number of foreign dignitaries and global leaders who visit the nation’s capital.
The ambitious project, spanning a vast 90,000 square feet, necessitated the demolition of the East Wing last October and has since faced legal challenges aimed at halting its progress. The White House itself is situated on federal parkland, adding another layer of scrutiny to the development. A panel tasked with reviewing the plans, chaired by a senior aide to President Trump, is scheduled to hold a final vote on the scheme on April 2.
Earlier this year, the US Commission of Fine Arts, whose members were appointed by Mr. Trump, provided unanimous endorsement for the proposal. During a visit to a group of farmers, with the construction site in view, the president, a renowned billionaire developer, expressed his passion for building, stating, “I love construction.”
He elaborated on the project’s purpose, describing it as a “big dig” to create a ballroom.
“Every president has said, ‘Can we have a ballroom, please? A room where you could have a lot of people?'” Trump remarked. He continued, “So when the president of China, France, when somebody comes over from the UK, including the King, we have the King coming over very shortly, King Charles, so we can have, like, a large room, because the White House is incredible, but it never had a ballroom.”
Trump confidently predicted the ballroom’s future acclaim, stating, “That’ll be the finest ballroom anywhere in the world when it’s completed. I love construction. I love building beautiful things.”
The East Wing, which was demolished to make way for the new ballroom, held historical significance. It was originally erected in 1902 during Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency and later expanded in 1942 under Franklin Roosevelt.
The privately funded ballroom development is designed to accommodate up to 1,000 guests and is slated for completion before the conclusion of Mr. Trump’s presidency in 2029.
Adding a layer of urgency and international focus to the ballroom’s development is the anticipated visit of King Charles III. Earlier this week, President Trump addressed concerns about potential transatlantic tensions stemming from the Iran war, asserting that such issues would not derail the King’s planned trip to the US.
There have been calls from some quarters for the historic royal tour to be postponed or even cancelled due to the ongoing Middle East crisis. While the tour has yet to be officially announced, it is widely expected that the King and Queen will visit Washington and New York in April. This visit is intended to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence, a significant milestone for the United States. The prospect of hosting such esteemed guests, including the British monarch, undoubtedly fuels the argument for enhanced state-hosting facilities at the White House.
