A high-level meeting took place in Lahore between the Chinese Consul General, Sun Yan, and the Punjab Home Secretary, Dr. Ahmad Javed Qazi. This significant visit, the first for Consul General Sun Yan since assuming his post, underscored the deepening relationship between China and Pakistan, with a particular emphasis on ensuring the safety and security of Chinese citizens working within the province.
The discussions primarily revolved around the prevailing law and order situation in Punjab. A key agenda item was the comprehensive security framework in place for Chinese nationals engaged in various projects across the region. Consul General Sun Yan conveyed his satisfaction with the visit to Lahore, acknowledging its rich historical tapestry and its importance as a cultural hub. He underscored the enduring fraternal bonds that characterize the relationship between China and Pakistan, noting the substantial progress of numerous China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiatives within Punjab.
Sun Yan further observed that Chinese nationals are operating within a secure and amicable atmosphere throughout the province. He extended his appreciation to the Home Department for its instrumental role in fostering an environment of peace and stability.
Responding to the Consul General’s remarks, Dr. Ahmad Javed Qazi extended a warm welcome and unequivocally stated that the provincial government considers the safety and security of all Chinese nationals in Punjab its paramount concern. He expressed optimism that Consul General Sun Yan’s tenure in Lahore will serve as a catalyst for further strengthening the already robust historical ties between Pakistan and China.
The Home Secretary provided a detailed overview of the robust security measures implemented across Punjab. He highlighted that foolproof security arrangements have been put into effect in all industrial zones within the province, ensuring a secure working environment for all.
Furthermore, Dr. Qazi elaborated on the ongoing efforts to bolster the capabilities of the Special Protection Unit (SPU). This enhancement is crucial for providing specialized security services and rapid response capabilities. The government is also diligently ensuring strict adherence to federal government protocols designed to facilitate the safe and secure movement of Chinese nationals throughout Punjab. This includes provisions for secure transportation and escort services where deemed necessary.
The meeting concluded with the traditional exchange of commemorative gifts, a gesture symbolizing mutual respect and the strengthening of diplomatic relations.
The productive session saw the participation of several other distinguished officials. Representing the People’s Republic of China were the Deputy Consul General and other senior diplomatic staff. On the Pakistani side, the meeting was attended by the Special Secretary Home, Additional Secretaries responsible for Foreign National Security and Internal Security, and the Deputy Secretary for Foreign National Security, along with other relevant officials from the Home Department. This broad representation from both sides highlighted the comprehensive nature of the discussions and the shared commitment to fostering a secure and collaborative environment.
