Madison Cast: Taylor Sheridan’s New Show Will Hook You

The Madison: A New Taylor Sheridan Drama Explores Grief and Resilience in Rugged Montana

Fans of acclaimed writer and creator Taylor Sheridan are well acquainted with his knack for delving into the raw, often unforgiving, aspects of life. His previous works, including the immensely popular Yellowstone, the historical saga 1883, the period drama 1923, and the more recent Landman, have consistently showcased his talent for crafting stories set against sweeping landscapes, often exploring themes of family, survival, and the American West. Now, with his latest offering, The Madison, Sheridan once again brings his signature emotional depth, this time focusing on the grief-stricken Clyburn family.

The series sees the family, accustomed to the comforts of their Manhattan existence, forced to relocate to the rugged beauty of Montana following a devastating personal loss. Led by Michelle Pfeiffer as Stacy Clyburn, the family must navigate not only their new, unfamiliar surroundings but also the complex terrain of their shared grief, seeking to find their way back to one another along the picturesque Madison River.

Michelle Pfeiffer, 67, shared her perspective on the character and the audience’s potential connection to her journey. “I think [the audience] will relate to her particular, specific agony she’s living with and living through,” she commented. “And I think that they’ll enjoy watching this family that’s now a fish out of water learning new things about themselves.”

What Sets The Madison Apart?

While The Madison undoubtedly shares its creative DNA with Sheridan’s other ambitious dramas, it carves out its own distinct identity. The series adopts a more tranquil and introspective tone compared to some of his more action-packed productions. However, this shift in pace does not come at the expense of the emotional resonance that viewers have come to expect from Sheridan’s storytelling; the tear-jerking moments are still very much present.

Beau Garrett, 43, who portrays Stacy’s elder daughter Abigail, highlighted the show’s unique approach. “What makes The Madison so different than Taylor Sheridan’s other shows is the quietness in which it lives,” she explained. “I think it is a very emotionally complex, quite poetic and simple story about a family grieving and trying to find their way back to each other in a landscape that they are very unfamiliar with.”

A Female-Led Perspective

Marking a significant milestone as Sheridan’s first project told primarily from a female perspective, The Madison also features a female director, Christina Alexandra Voros. On screen, Pfeiffer, alongside Garrett and newcomer Elle Chapman, who plays the younger Clyburn daughter Paige, anchors the emotional core of the narrative.

Elle Chapman, 26, spoke about the on-screen family dynamic, noting the significant female presence. “As you can see watching the show, Russell’s very outnumbered by all the women on the show,” she said, referring to Patrick J. Adams, who plays her on-screen husband.

For co-star Kevin Zegers, 41, who plays Cade Harris, this dynamic held particular significance. As a father of 10-year-old twin daughters, he found it meaningful to bring his girls to the set and show them a story where so much of the narrative unfolds through the experiences of these two women.

A Nuanced Exploration of Grief

At the heart of The Madison lies a deeply layered and personal examination of loss. The series delves into grief in a manner that feels less like a singular emotion and more akin to the multifaceted reality of human experience.

Patrick J. Adams, 44, suggested that the show intentionally creates space for the messier, more unexpected emotions that can surface in the wake of tragedy. He specifically pointed to the dynamic between his character, Russell, and Paige, as a source of welcome levity amidst the heavy subject matter.

“I think part of the gift of this show is that we get to provide this other colour of [grief],” the former Suits star remarked. “Grief comes in a lot of shades and, I think maybe for me, one of the most complicated ones of those shades is the laughter and the weird kind of silliness that you find when you’re going through something horrible, you know?”

The Landscape as a Character

True to form with Taylor Sheridan’s body of work, the setting in The Madison is not merely a backdrop but an active participant in the narrative. Christina Voros, 48, commented that the landscape itself acts as a “main character,” contributing significantly to the show’s distinctive personality. Filmed in the breathtaking Madison River Valley and its surrounding areas in Montana, the series is enveloped in a rugged, expansive beauty that starkly contrasts with the Clyburns’ former urban life in Manhattan.

The river, the imposing mountains, and the sheer, raw openness of the land all become integral to the family’s emotional journey as they strive to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of their tragedy. This profound connection to the locale is precisely why, as Elle Chapman shared, the show “feels like a love story to family and a love story to Montana.”

Chemistry That Shines Through

The apparent ease and natural chemistry amongst the cast members on screen are not accidental. Much of this connection was already present, cultivated during the production process. Patrick J. Adams spoke enthusiastically about his experience working with Elle Chapman, praising the first-time TV actress for the vibrant energy she brought to the set.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better partner in this. Elle brings such joy and gratitude and wonder and silliness,” he enthused. “She shows up with just such enthusiasm and excitement, like, ‘I can’t believe we get to do this today. Look at how cool this is,’ and it reminds me to enjoy every moment of it.”

The reunion of Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell on screen, 36 years after they last starred together in the 1988 film Tequila Sunrise, was a particularly special moment. Russell portrays patriarch Preston Clyburn, and Pfeiffer remarked on their seamless return to working together, stating, “It was like no time had passed. It’s wonderful.”
