Pepsodent Ignites Oral Health Awareness in Nigerian Schools

Pepsodent, a leading toothpaste brand, has embarked on a significant nationwide campaign aimed at instilling robust oral hygiene practices among Nigerian children. The initiative, which spanned across 17 states, reached an impressive 51 schools in key cities, including Port Harcourt, Abeokuta, Sagamu, Ibadan, Ondo Town, Awka, Enugu, Abuja, Lagos, Yenagoa, Keffi, Calabar, Uyo, and Benin City. This extensive activation was strategically timed to coincide with the global observance of World Oral Health Day, underscoring the brand’s commitment to preventive oral care.

The core of the campaign involved engaging demonstrations designed to educate young pupils on the fundamental principles of maintaining good oral hygiene. Beyond these practical sessions, a diverse array of resource persons were instrumental in imparting knowledge to thousands of schoolchildren. Through interactive learning environments and a variety of engaging activities, these experts highlighted the profound importance of proper oral care for overall health and well-being.

World Oral Health Day, celebrated annually, serves as a crucial platform to elevate public consciousness regarding the indispensable link between oral health and an individual’s general health, quality of life, and overall sense of well-being. Pepsodent’s campaign directly aligns with this global mission, focusing on the most impressionable demographic – children – who are often most susceptible to developing poor dental habits.

“Do The 2” Campaign: A Focus on Consistent Habits

During an awareness event held at Temidire Primary School in Oke-Odo, Alimosho, Lagos, Lauretta Amie, the Brand Manager for Pepsodent, elaborated on the campaign’s objectives. She emphasized that the initiative is a testament to Pepsodent’s enduring dedication to preventive oral care, particularly for children. Amie highlighted how the combination of educational content and hands-on learning experiences empowers children to grasp the significance of correct brushing techniques, the impact of sugar consumption on dental health, and the necessity of regular dental check-ups.

Amie further stated that Pepsodent is committed to collaborating with educational institutions, parents, and local communities to reinforce these vital habits. The goal is to ensure that the knowledge acquired during these campaigns is translated into consistent practices, both within the school environment and in the home.

The campaign received strong support from local educational authorities. Dr. Aminat Ige, the Education Secretary of Alimosho Local Government Education Secretary, acknowledged that the sensitization efforts would significantly enhance awareness among both students and parents regarding the critical importance of oral hygiene practices.

Moninuola Lawal, the Headteacher of Temidire Primary School, echoed these sentiments, noting that the campaign’s presence in their school had provided a memorable experience for students and staff alike. She underscored the often-underestimated role of oral health in a child’s overall well-being, impacting everything from self-confidence to their capacity for learning and concentration.

“The interactive sessions, demonstrations, and screenings create lasting impressions that our students can carry home, helping families adopt better oral care habits together,” Lawal stated. “Initiatives like this are exactly what we need to ensure our children grow up with strong, healthy teeth and the knowledge to maintain them for life.”

Adding to the chorus of support, dental surgeon Dr. Abraham Akinbami commended the initiative, predicting that it would be a catalyst for positive behavioral change. He expressed his appreciation for Unilever, through Pepsodent, taking the proactive step to cultivate oral hygiene habits among young individuals, who are generally more receptive to adopting new practices compared to older demographics.
