“Images of Keta” Exhibition to Unveil Coastal Town’s Rich Heritage
Keta, a historic coastal settlement nestled in Ghana’s Volta Region, is poised to become the focal point of a significant four-day photographic exhibition. Titled “Images of Keta,” the event is scheduled to run from April 3rd to April 6th, 2026, at the Keta Municipal Assembly Hall. Its primary objective is to illuminate the town’s vibrant cosmopolitan past, celebrate its influential figures, and address the persistent challenge of sea erosion that has impacted its landscape.
Organised by the Images of Keta Foundation, the exhibition promises attendees a visual journey through Keta’s illustrious history. Through a curated selection of photographs, visitors will be transported to the town’s golden era, spanning from its early interactions with European traders to the impactful decades of the 1980s, a period marked by the detrimental effects of sea erosion that have reshaped its former grandeur.
The exhibition will delve into the lives and contributions of Keta’s notable personalities. The collection will feature portraits and scenes depicting individuals from diverse professions, including:
- Maritime and Trade Professionals: Fishermen, traders, and shop owners who formed the backbone of Keta’s economic life.
- Skilled Artisans and Service Providers: Goldsmiths, weavers, and merchants of “kete” cloth, showcasing the town’s artisanal prowess.
- Educators and Professionals: Teachers, chemists, doctors, nurses, lawyers, and judges, reflecting Keta’s development as a centre of learning and legal expertise.
- Public Service Figures: Drivers, police officers, prison officers, and soldiers, highlighting the town’s role in governance and security.
- Spiritual Leaders: Priests who played a vital role in the community’s spiritual and social fabric.
These individuals, through their dedication and endeavors, are credited with placing Keta firmly on the global map.
The foundation’s press release emphasized Keta’s historical significance as a magnet for diverse populations. In its prime, the town attracted individuals from across the globe, fostering a rich tapestry of cultures and interactions. This cosmopolitan allure drew people from:
- Europe

- The Caribbean
- The Middle East, notably Syria and Lebanon
- West Africa, including Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Niger, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
The enduring legacy of these historical human connections is evident today in the numerous descendants who proudly call Keta their home.
Beyond merely chronicling Keta’s history through imagery, the “Images of Keta” exhibition aims to serve as a powerful source of inspiration for current and future generations. By vividly recalling the town’s glorious past, the organizers hope to ignite a collective spirit of pride and a renewed commitment to restoring Keta to its former prominence, or even surpassing it.
The foundation, comprised of a dedicated group of individuals including Mr. Alfred Tamakloe, Mr. Cornelius Adedze, Mr. Gavivina Tamakloe, Dr. Kordzo Sedegah, and Mr. Dephor Galley, envisions this exhibition as an annual event. Their broader mission encompasses showcasing the history of Keta, encompassing not only the town but also the historical district which previously included Anloga, Keta, Ketu South and North, and Akatsi South and North. Their ultimate goal is to foster an appreciation for this rich heritage and motivate contemporary and future citizens to actively contribute to Keta’s continued growth and greatness.
The organizers extend a heartfelt invitation to all, particularly during the Easter period, to partake in this celebration of Keta’s illustrious past and its promising future. They urge the public to experience the “grand, memorable, and unforgettable images of Keta,” encouraging strong patronage for this inaugural event. The exhibition promises to be a captivating and enlightening experience for all who attend, offering a profound insight into the soul of this historic Ghanaian town.
