Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez is poised to make a significant impact on his potential debut for Nigeria, expressing a strong desire to seize his first international call-up with the Super Eagles. The 24-year-old centre-back, who arrived at Ibrox Stadium from Peterborough United last summer, has been named in coach Eric Chelle’s 23-man squad for upcoming international friendlies against Iran and Jordan, with the prospect of earning his maiden senior cap.
Fernandez articulated his ambition, stating, “The idea is to go in there and try and make my mark.” This sentiment underscores his determination to impress at the highest level of international football.
The Nigerian-eligible defender has enjoyed a stellar debut season in Scotland, quickly establishing himself as a key figure for Rangers. His contributions have been impressive, marked by five goals and ten clean sheets in 25 appearances across all competitions. These performances have been instrumental in Rangers’ strong title challenge in the Scottish Premiership, showcasing his dual threat as both a defensive stalwart and a significant attacking presence from set-pieces.
His commanding performances have not escaped the attention of clubs beyond Scotland’s borders. Reports have emerged indicating that Premier League giants Arsenal have registered their interest in securing his signature. The list of admirers is extensive, with Chelsea, West Ham United, Everton, and several prominent European clubs including Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, and Belgian side Club Brugge, also said to be closely monitoring the 6ft 6in centre-back. His versatility is another attractive quality, as he is capable of deputising at right-back, adding further value to his profile.
Rangers, a club known for its successful player sales, with Calvin Bassey’s £19.6 million move to Ajax in 2022 remaining their record departure, are reportedly valuing Fernandez at approximately £35 million. However, the Scottish club is not under immediate pressure to offload him. Fernandez’s current contract extends until 2029, providing Rangers with significant security. Nevertheless, the club would reportedly be open to reconsidering his future should a formal offer that meets their valuation materialise.
Fernandez is not the only new face set to potentially debut for Nigeria in the upcoming fixtures. He is joined by winger Yira Sor and forward Philip Otele, both of whom will be looking to make their senior international bows during the training camp in Antalya, Turkey. This influx of new talent signals a period of evolution and fresh possibilities for the Super Eagles.
The Nigerian national team is scheduled to face Iran on Friday, followed by a match against Jordan on Tuesday, March 31. Both fixtures are slated to take place in Antalya, Turkey. This change in venue from the originally planned location in Amman was necessitated by security concerns within the region, ensuring the safety and smooth execution of the matches. The camp in Turkey presents a crucial opportunity for these new players to integrate into the squad and for coach Chelle to assess their capabilities ahead of future international competitions.
