Pub Worker’s Shocking Rise to Guy Ritchie Thriller Lead

Young Sherlock’s Shocking Twist: The Rise of Holly Cattle

Guy Ritchie’s new prequel series, Young Sherlock, has quickly captured the attention of audiences, soaring to the top of the Amazon Prime Video charts. The show delves into the formative years of the iconic detective, offering a bold reimagining of his youth with a star-studded cast. For viewers who have been engrossed in the eight-episode season, punctuated by Ritchie’s signature action-packed style, a significant late-season twist has undoubtedly left a lasting impression.

The revelation centres around Edie, the seemingly unassuming secretary to Sir Bucephalus Hodge (played by Colin Firth). It transpires that Edie is, in fact, Beatrice, Sherlock’s (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) long-lost sister, who has been orchestrating a complex scheme alongside their father, Silas (Joseph Fiennes). This revelation adds another layer of intricate family drama to the Holmes lineage, a familiar theme for those acquainted with the detective’s world.

A Near Miss and a Breakout Role

The actress behind this pivotal twist, rising star Holly Cattle, recently shared insights into her journey to securing such a significant role. Cattle was working at a pub when she received the script. “I was on the way to work, and I read the script on the train, and I just thought: ‘I cannot go to work. I have to do this’,” she recalled, as the audition deadline loomed.

Facing a chaotic situation at her workplace – with tills down and general mayhem – Cattle made a bold decision. She called her manager to explain her absence, stating, “I’m so sorry. I haven’t read a character or a script this amazing in a really long time.” This leap of faith paid off. After returning home and dedicating herself to learning her lines, Cattle successfully navigated the audition process. “Thank goodness, after a couple of rounds of auditions, I did get it,” she said, relieved she could inform her manager that the risk was indeed worthwhile, though she “very nearly risked being fired for that.”

Prior to Young Sherlock, Cattle had featured in shows like COBRA and Mr Loverman. This new role marks her most substantial to date, placing her in the company of other actresses who have portrayed significant female figures within the Sherlock Holmes universe, such as the BBC’s Lola Petticrew as Eurus and Millie Bobby Brown’s portrayal of Enola.

Embodying Beatrice: A Fresh Interpretation

The concept of introducing a mysterious sister to both Sherlock and Mycroft was a creative decision made specifically for the screen. Cattle explained that she consciously “steered clear of watching and delving too deep into other interpretations, to keep [hers] as fresh as possible.”

She elaborated on the enduring fascination with such characters: “She’s always linked to even further familial mystery for the eponymous Sherlock. She works as a vice for whoever’s creating that version to tap into his inner world in a way that they can’t through other characters. So maybe that’s the intrigue there.”

Cattle’s portrayal of Beatrice is particularly striking, especially during the dramatic showdown where she reveals her true identity to her estranged family. The actress was captivated by how her character “totally flips gender norms on their head.”

“She commands any space she goes into,” Cattle observed. “What’s quite terrifying about her is her ability to manipulate any social scenario she’s in.” She further praised Beatrice’s “artistry of mimicry,” which proved instrumental in allowing her to seamlessly inhabit the different facets of the character.

This complexity aligns perfectly with the series’ overarching themes, which Cattle described as “dark, stormy, scary, funny and will flip everything you previously thought about all the characters.”

Working with the Masters

Beyond her pivotal role, the opportunity to collaborate closely with seasoned actors like Colin Firth and Joseph Fiennes was a significant aspect of the experience. Cattle spoke fondly of her interactions with Firth, describing him as a “laugh-a-minute” King’s Speech star, with whom she “bonded over loving all the same chocolates and the same books” from the outset.

Her experience working with Joseph Fiennes was, in her words, “unlike anything I’ve experienced.” She recounted a particular scene on a cliff in episode eight: “I was wrapped for the day, but I was like: ‘No, I am not leaving. I’m watching this.’ He truly is phenomenal at what he does. You learn so much just from watching him work as well, and the way he goes through and interrogates the text as well.”

All this took place on Guy Ritchie’s set, known for its intense and demanding environment. “You get fresh lines in right before a scene, which at the beginning is super daunting,” Cattle admitted. However, she quickly came to appreciate the effectiveness of Ritchie’s methods. “Actually, by the end, you totally see the magic in the way he works. He makes all the actors throw their previous ideas out the window last minute, and then that’s where we get the really, really brilliant stuff and really truthful moments.”

Future Prospects and New Horizons

While Beatrice wields a firearm in many of her later scenes, Cattle expressed a desire for her character to engage in more direct action in potential future seasons. “I’d love to see her get into more trouble. I’d like to see some fighting from her,” she stated.

Currently, Cattle is enjoying a successful period in her career, having also joined the cast of Rivals season two, scheduled for release in May. While she remained tight-lipped about the specifics of her new role, she shared that the returning cast welcomed her warmly. “It just felt like I was joining a family from day one,” she said. “We have long, long days together, and it doesn’t feel like going to work at all. We’re often up in the green room playing board games and yapping away with each other until the sun sets.”

Looking ahead, Cattle has a clear vision for her career path. “I feel very fortunate to have played characters who are quite outspoken and on the fringes of their groups, formidable women for their time,” she reflected. “I think I just want to take that as far as I can, really.”

Young Sherlock is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
