The 30-year-old maestro was at his electrifying best, setting the tone for the match with a dominant first half that saw him rack up three goals and 18 possessions.

Bontempelli’s influence didn’t wane throughout the contest. He finished with a remarkable 33 disposals, a staggering 11 inside-50 entries, and was involved in 11 scoring chains. His exceptional display was a cornerstone of the Bulldogs’ overwhelming 21.8 (134) to 7.11 (53) win, an 81-point thrashing that left the Giants reeling.

“It’s rare that I stand in front of the group and blow smoke, because I don’t want him to feel uncomfortable,” Beveridge admitted, highlighting the exceptional nature of Bontempelli’s performance. “But after today, it was necessary to definitely acknowledge how well he played. He was quite incredible, really.”

The Bulldogs’ midfield engine room was firing on all cylinders, with Bontempelli leading the charge. He was ably supported by his fellow midfielders, Tom Liberatore, who collected 29 possessions, and Matthew Kennedy, who contributed 27 disposals. Kingsley described the defeat as almost a “carbon copy” of that previous encounter.

Giants captain Toby Greene toiled valiantly, amassing 26 disposals and spending significant time through the midfield. However, he found himself lacking the necessary support from his teammates to significantly impact the game.

“He started really well. Without the same level of finish as Bontempelli had in the first half, the numbers were similar,” Kingsley observed, acknowledging Greene’s individual effort. “I thought he was one who did show some fight, and tried to do something about it. But we’ve got to get more on the bus.”

Despite the overall gloom for GWS, there were a few glimmers of hope. Finn Callaghan demonstrated no signs of rust, despite missing training during the week due to soreness, contributing two goals and gathering 27 disposals.
