Bontempelli’s Brilliance Fuels Bulldogs’ Dominant Victory
Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge didn’t hold back in his praise for superstar midfielder Marcus Bontempelli following an “incredible” performance that spearheaded his side to a crushing victory over Greater Western Sydney (GWS) at Marvel Stadium. The 30-year-old maestro was at his electrifying best, setting the tone for the match with a dominant first half that saw him rack up three goals and 18 possessions.
Bontempelli’s influence didn’t wane throughout the contest. He finished with a remarkable 33 disposals, a staggering 11 inside-50 entries, and was involved in 11 scoring chains. His exceptional display was a cornerstone of the Bulldogs’ overwhelming 21.8 (134) to 7.11 (53) win, an 81-point thrashing that left the Giants reeling.
“It’s rare that I stand in front of the group and blow smoke, because I don’t want him to feel uncomfortable,” Beveridge admitted, highlighting the exceptional nature of Bontempelli’s performance. “But after today, it was necessary to definitely acknowledge how well he played. He was quite incredible, really.”

The Bulldogs’ midfield engine room was firing on all cylinders, with Bontempelli leading the charge. He was ably supported by his fellow midfielders, Tom Liberatore, who collected 29 possessions, and Matthew Kennedy, who contributed 27 disposals. This midfield dominance allowed the Bulldogs to completely overpower GWS in the clearance battle, winning the count a commanding 45 to 26.
With the midfield controlling the tempo and dictating play, the Bulldogs’ forward line capitalised ruthlessly. Spearhead Aaron Naughton was in scintillating form, booting six goals, while Sam Darcy added a valuable four goals to the scoreboard. The consistent pressure and flawless execution from the Dogs saw them extend their lead at every break, building from a 16-point advantage at quarter-time to a 38-point buffer at half-time, and then a substantial 58-point lead by three-quarter time.
Giants Lament Lack of Fight in Heavy Defeat
GWS coach Adam Kingsley was left to lament his side’s apparent lack of competitive spirit in the face of the Bulldogs’ relentless onslaught. This latest defeat marks the tenth loss in their last eleven encounters against the Bulldogs, with Saturday’s performance eerily echoing their 88-point loss at the same venue last season. Kingsley described the defeat as almost a “carbon copy” of that previous encounter.
Giants captain Toby Greene toiled valiantly, amassing 26 disposals and spending significant time through the midfield. However, he found himself lacking the necessary support from his teammates to significantly impact the game.
“He started really well. Without the same level of finish as Bontempelli had in the first half, the numbers were similar,” Kingsley observed, acknowledging Greene’s individual effort. “I thought he was one who did show some fight, and tried to do something about it. But we’ve got to get more on the bus.”
Despite the overall gloom for GWS, there were a few glimmers of hope. Finn Callaghan demonstrated no signs of rust, despite missing training during the week due to soreness, contributing two goals and gathering 27 disposals.
Bulldogs Build Momentum Early in 2026 Season
The Western Bulldogs have made a strong statement of intent early in the 2026 season. After a challenging 2025 campaign where they secured only two wins from eleven matches against top-eight teams, they have now begun 2026 by notching up victories against two of last year’s finalists. This impressive start follows their triumph over Brisbane in the Opening Round, signalling a significant upswing in form and confidence.
The Bulldogs’ ability to consistently dismantle their opponents, as evidenced by their dominant performance against GWS, is a testament to their strong midfield, potent forward line, and the inspirational leadership of players like Marcus Bontempelli. The team’s ability to extend their lead throughout the match and maintain pressure until the final siren underscores their fitness and tactical discipline. As the season progresses, the Bulldogs will be looking to build on this early momentum and establish themselves as genuine contenders.
