Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach Apologises for Infamous MTV VMAs Love Triangle
Rock icon Sebastian Bach, the charismatic frontman of the legendary band Skid Row, has finally broken his silence regarding a sensational love triangle involving Hollywood superstar Christina Applegate and a young Brad Pitt. The incident, which occurred at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, has resurfaced thanks to Applegate’s candid revelations in her recent memoir.
Bach, now 57, expressed his surprise at the renewed attention on the decades-old drama, stating in a recent interview with Billboard that he was unaware of Applegate’s anecdote until her memoir, You with the Sad Eyes, was published. He offered an apology for any hurt he may have caused during the event, acknowledging the whirlwind nature of life in the rock and roll scene.
“I was a single guy on tour, in a band, and I met a lot of girls and I apologize if I hurt her… If I hurt anybody,” Bach stated. He further elaborated on the experience, likening it to being on a roller coaster. “When you’re young you get thrown into the whirlwind of rock ‘n’ roll, meeting a lot of people and you better hold on tight. It’s like being on a roller coaster… It was a long time ago. If I hurt anybody, I apologize for it.”
The Night Christina Applegate Chose Rock Over Hollywood Royalty
The story, as recounted by Applegate, paints a vivid picture of a young Hollywood starlet caught between two burgeoning talents. At the time, Applegate, then 17, was already a household name for her role in the hit sitcom Married… with Children. Brad Pitt, 62, was a 25-year-old actor still on the cusp of the global superstardom he commands today.
Applegate had brought Pitt as her date to the prestigious MTV Video Music Awards, held at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles. However, once inside, her attention was irrevocably captured by Sebastian Bach, the long-haired, energetic lead singer of Skid Row.
“I hate to put it like this, but Brad back then was still making his way as an actor, and he wasn’t yet THE Brad Pitt, the man of so many people’s dreams,” Applegate wrote in her memoir. She admitted to being completely smitten with Bach, describing him as a “long-haired hunk.”
A Humiliating End to the Evening for Pitt
As the awards ceremony progressed, Applegate found herself increasingly distracted by Bach. Ultimately, she made the bold decision to leave the event with the musician, effectively ditching her then-boyfriend, Brad Pitt.
The situation took an even more awkward turn for Pitt. Left behind, he was tasked with the unenviable job of driving Applegate’s mother and her friend, Lori Allison, home. Allison, a makeup artist, is also notable as the first ex-wife of actor Johnny Depp.
Adding to the night’s drama, Applegate recounted that Pitt almost got into a physical altercation with a group of gang members at a gas station on the drive home. This incident, combined with being left stranded, left Pitt understandably furious with Applegate.
Lingering Resentment and Eventual Reconciliation
The fallout from the VMAs incident was significant. Applegate revealed that Pitt held onto his anger for several years, with multiple later “movie star girlfriends” of his inquiring about the “girl who left Brad behind at the MTV Video Music Awards.” Apparently, Pitt had confided in them separately about his lingering resentment.
It wasn’t until much later that Applegate and Pitt were able to mend fences. They eventually reached an understanding, with Applegate attributing her actions to her youth. “Eventually, we agreed that I’d been a child, and though he deserved much better, it was time to forgive the child who dumped him for the lead singer of Skid Row,” she explained. She wryly noted the contrast between Pitt’s current status as a global icon and Bach’s enduring rockstar image.
Applegate’s Rock and Roll Connections
Interestingly, Christina Applegate’s romantic life has indeed seen her settle down with a musician. After a marriage to actor Johnathon Schaech from 2001 to 2007, she found love with Dutch bassist Martyn Le Noble. The couple exchanged vows in 2013, and Le Noble is a member of the Los Angeles-based alt-rock band Porno for Pyros. The VMAs incident, it seems, was an early, albeit dramatic, foreshadowing of her future romantic inclinations.
