Youth unemployment has emerged as a critical issue contributing to rising levels of banditry and terrorism in Nigeria, according to the Chief Imam of Lekki Central Mosque, Imam Ridwan Jamiu. He highlighted the urgent need for all levels of government to focus on creating more job opportunities for young people, emphasizing that this is a crucial step toward addressing the nation’s security challenges.
Imam Jamiu made these remarks during the Ramadan Da’Awah Workshop organized by Lekki Muslim Ummah (LEMU). The event, which focused on the theme ‘Islam, Youth and Social Development,’ aimed to bring together community leaders, religious figures, and youth representatives to discuss ways to foster positive change.
He stressed that youths aged 18 to 40 are the future of the nation and possess the energy and strength to drive development. However, he noted that without proper direction, this energy could be misdirected into destructive activities. “The insecurity we face today would significantly reduce if our youths are engaged in meaningful activities,” he said. He further pointed out that those involved in banditry, terrorism, armed robbery, and other criminal acts are predominantly young people.
In addition to government action, Imam Jamiu called on parents to take responsibility for the upbringing and moral guidance of their children. He emphasized that a strong foundation in values and ethics is essential in preventing youth from falling into delinquency.
President of LEMU, Alhaji Abdulganiyu Labinjo, echoed these sentiments, urging Muslim youths to seek knowledge and strive for excellence, as encouraged by the Quran. He also highlighted the importance of reshaping the global narrative about Islam to counter misconceptions and biases against Muslims.
On the role of mentorship, Alhaji Nasir Giwa, Coordinator and Grand Mentor of NGM Platform, stressed that mentorship is an urgent necessity to prepare youths for future challenges. He noted that many struggles faced by young people, especially in the corporate world, stem from a lack of proper guidance and support.
Hajia Sessan Sulaiman, Partner at Templars, added that challenges faced by young people in the corporate sector are often exacerbated by inadequate guidance and mentorship. She emphasized the need for structured programs that provide young professionals with the tools and resources to succeed.
The speakers at the workshop collectively agreed that a multifaceted approach is required to harness the potential of Nigerian youths. This includes government intervention, mentorship programs, parental responsibility, and faith-based guidance. By addressing these areas, the nation can create an environment where young people are empowered to contribute positively to society.
Through collaborative efforts, Nigeria can move toward a future where its youth are not only employed but also inspired to become leaders and changemakers. The message from the workshop was clear: investing in youth is not just an economic imperative but a social and moral one as well.
