The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 62-year-old man accused of defiling a 12-year-old girl in Akure, the capital city of Ondo State. The incident has sparked widespread concern and calls for justice within the community.
According to a statement released by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the case has been handed over to the Gender-Based Offences Unit for a thorough and discreet investigation. This move underscores the seriousness with which the police are treating the matter, given the sensitive nature of the crime.
Jimoh revealed that the victim’s mother, Mrs. Adebayo Sefunmi, reported the incident on March 3. She is a resident of Akure and claims that the alleged crime took place on February 28, 2026, at approximately 7 p.m. in the Ehin Ala area. According to the report, Imeje Mathew, the accused, is alleged to have defiled her 12-year-old daughter.
The police officer explained that the suspect reportedly lured the minor into a nearby bush under the pretense of offering assistance. The incident allegedly occurred after the child had visited the suspect’s shop to charge her mother’s phone. During this encounter, the suspect is said to have forcefully engaged in unlawful carnal knowledge with the young girl.
The victim is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital, and the suspect remains in police custody. Authorities have emphasized that the investigation is ongoing to ensure that the case is handled diligently and that the appropriate legal actions are taken against the accused.
The case has drawn significant attention from the local community, with many expressing shock and outrage over the alleged crime. Parents and guardians have called for stricter measures to protect children from such heinous acts. The incident also highlights the need for increased awareness and education about child safety and protection.
As the investigation continues, the police have urged anyone with additional information to come forward and assist in bringing the perpetrator to justice. The Gender-Based Offences Unit is expected to conduct a comprehensive inquiry, including interviews with witnesses and gathering evidence to support the case.
The police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that justice is served swiftly and fairly. They have also emphasized the importance of supporting victims of such crimes, both emotionally and medically. The authorities have pledged to take all necessary steps to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
In addition, there are growing calls for more resources and training for law enforcement agencies to handle cases involving minors effectively. This includes better access to forensic services and psychological support for victims.
The arrest of Imeje Mathew marks a critical step in addressing the issue of child abuse in the region. While the investigation is still in progress, the police have made it clear that they will not hesitate to take strong action against those who commit such crimes. The community remains hopeful that this case will lead to meaningful changes in how child protection is handled in the state.
