Key stakeholders in Benue State have convened to discuss strategies aimed at mitigating the persistent issue of violence in the region. This initiative is being led by the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), which has received support from the United Kingdom. The collaboration seeks to enhance conflict surveillance and rapid response systems within the state.
The meeting was organized under the UK-funded Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRiNG) project. This initiative is focused on reinforcing Nigeria’s National Conflict Early Warning and Early Response System (NCEWERS). A significant emphasis has been placed on gender and social inclusion, ensuring that all voices are heard and considered in the process.
Participants in the engagement included representatives from various groups such as Community-Based Reconciliation Committees, Early Warning and Early Response Groups, Gender Focal Persons, and organizations that advocate for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). Additionally, faith-based organizations and relevant government agencies from Makurdi, Otukpo, and Guma Local Government Areas were present. These participants engaged in discussions about practical measures to improve real-time conflict monitoring and coordinated response mechanisms.
Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, the Director-General of the IPCR, described the meeting as a renewed effort to enhance collaboration and data-driven monitoring in a state that continues to face security challenges. He emphasized the importance of effective coordination among international partners, national institutions, and grassroots actors in preventing violence and strengthening social cohesion.
Ochogwu highlighted that the complex and overlapping security threats in Benue require stronger institutional synergy, timely intelligence gathering, and swift intervention mechanisms. He noted that these elements are essential for creating a more secure environment for the residents of the state.
The outcomes of the meeting will be used to develop a comprehensive action plan that addresses the specific needs of Benue State. This plan will involve continued collaboration between the IPCR, the UK, and other stakeholders to ensure that the strategies implemented are effective and sustainable.
In addition to the immediate actions, there is a need for ongoing dialogue and capacity-building initiatives. These efforts will help in maintaining the momentum generated by the meeting and in addressing any emerging challenges.
The success of these initiatives will depend on the commitment of all involved parties to work together towards a common goal. By fostering a culture of cooperation and mutual respect, the stakeholders aim to create a safer and more stable environment for the people of Benue State.
