Jon Rahm, the captain of the LIV Golf League, has made strong statements against the DP World Tour, accusing it of attempting to “extort” players. He has firmly stated that he will not commit to the tour’s requirement of competing in six events per season. This declaration came as he prepares for this week’s LIV Golf League tournament in Hong Kong.
Rahm, a two-time major champion, expressed his rejection of the proposed agreement due to what he described as restrictive and unfair conditions. He specifically objected to the DP World Tour’s insistence on dictating two of the six events he would be required to play. According to Rahm, this policy exploits the commercial value of LIV players while simultaneously penalizing them. He has indicated that he is open to signing an agreement based on a four-event commitment, which he claims aligns with existing rules. However, he confirmed that the tour has refused this compromise.
In addition to his concerns about the number of events, Rahm criticized the fines reportedly imposed on LIV-aligned players, which are said to reach as high as $3 million. He reiterated his stance that he has no intention of paying these fines. Although the DP World Tour recently granted conditional releases to eight players to compete in LIV events, Rahm was notably excluded. The tour mentioned that those approved had agreed to pay outstanding fines, play additional events, and withdraw appeals.
Rahm contrasted this situation with his previous dual membership of the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, stating that he had never before been required to seek releases. He argued that players should have the freedom to choose where they compete without facing excessive penalties or mandates.
One significant issue that remains unresolved is Rahm’s appeal over past sanctions, which could affect his eligibility for the Ryder Cup in 2027. Despite this, he insists that he remains willing to meet Ryder Cup commitments without being bound by what he views as unfair tour conditions.
