On International Women’s Day 2026, the National Women Leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Hajiya Sa’adatu Abdullahi, emphasized the need for greater inclusion and representation of women in Nigeria’s political and leadership spaces. Her message came as a tribute to Nigerian women, whom she described as the backbone of society. She praised their contributions across homes, communities, and politics, highlighting their essential role in shaping the nation.
Abdullahi’s call for increased female participation comes at a time when gender advocates and civil society groups are pushing for improved representation of women in governance. Despite their significant contributions, women remain underrepresented in elective and appointive positions within Nigeria’s political landscape.
In her statement, issued in Abuja, she stated, “Women continue to demonstrate leadership and determination in shaping a better future for our people. Their voices and participation are essential for national progress.” This sentiment reflects a broader movement toward recognizing the value of women’s input in decision-making processes.
The SDP women’s leader also urged more women to engage actively in party politics by joining the party. She noted that the SDP remains committed to creating opportunities for women in leadership roles. “The Social Democratic Party remains committed to inclusiveness, social justice, and creating meaningful opportunities for women to actively participate in leadership and decision-making,” she said.
Abdullahi further encouraged Nigerian women to unite and support one another in advancing the cause of gender equity and representation. She called on them to strengthen their collective voice in building a Nigeria where women are fully represented and empowered.
“Let us use this day not only to celebrate our achievements but also to strengthen our collective voice in building a Nigeria where women are fully represented and empowered,” she concluded. “Your strength, courage, and vision continue to inspire hope for a better tomorrow. Together, we can shape a more just, equitable, and prosperous nation.”
International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8, highlights the socio-economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while drawing attention to the need for gender equality and greater inclusion of women in leadership and decision-making.
In Nigeria, the push for gender inclusion has gained renewed attention following repeated setbacks for gender-related bills at the National Assembly. These developments have sparked ongoing debates about the need for stronger institutional support for women in politics.
Despite their potential, women in Nigeria face numerous challenges:
To address these challenges, several steps can be taken:
As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, it is essential to reflect on the progress made and the work still ahead. Hajiya Sa’adatu Abdullahi’s call for greater inclusion and representation of women in Nigerian politics serves as a reminder of the vital role women play in shaping the nation’s future.
