Nigeria is preparing to launch its first military jetty in Lagos, set to be commissioned in June 2026. This significant development marks a major step forward in the country’s efforts to enhance local defence production and create employment opportunities for both retired military personnel and skilled civilians.
The project, led by the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria-D7G (DICON-D7G), will be situated near Tin Can Island Port. It aims to serve as a dedicated maritime hub for the importation, assembly, and export of military hardware. The facility is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening Nigeria’s defence infrastructure and reducing reliance on foreign suppliers.
During an inspection of the proposed site, the Chief Executive Officer of DICON-D7G, Mr. Osman Chennar, emphasized the importance of the jetty as a strategic national asset. He described it as a critical component of Nigeria’s defence industrialisation drive.
“This facility is more than a maritime structure; it is the backbone of our logistics architecture,” Chennar stated. “It will redefine how Nigeria sources, assembles, produces, and exports defence equipment. We are closing a major gap in our supply chain.”
Chennar explained that the jetty will streamline the importation of Completely Knocked Down (CKD) and Semi-Knocked Down (SKD) components, as well as raw materials required for the domestic assembly of small and medium arms, ammunition, tactical drones, unmanned systems, and Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles.
The facility is expected to generate over 7,000 jobs once it becomes operational. Specifically, it will employ around 2,000 retired senior military officers and approximately 5,000 civilian professionals. These professionals will include engineers, welders, fabricators, drone specialists, and logistics personnel.
The commissioning of the military jetty is anticipated to have a lasting impact on Nigeria’s defence capabilities and economic development. It represents a shift towards self-reliance in the production of military equipment, which could reduce dependency on foreign imports and enhance national security.
Moreover, the project aligns with broader national goals of industrialisation and job creation. By leveraging the skills of retired military personnel and other professionals, the jetty will contribute to the development of a more robust and sustainable defence industry.
As Nigeria moves forward with this initiative, the success of the military jetty could serve as a model for future projects aimed at strengthening the country’s industrial and technological capabilities.
