Former Bayelsa Governor Dickson Joins NDC Over PDP

A New Political Era Begins

Former Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Seriake Dickson, has made a significant move in the Nigerian political landscape by defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the newly registered political party: Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). This transition was announced on Thursday during a press conference in Abuja, where the NDC was officially introduced to the public.

Dickson, who previously served as a House of Representative member, governor for eight years, and later as a senator all under the PDP banner, described his decision as a strategic step towards building a credible opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections. His move comes at a time when many political analysts are closely watching the dynamics of Nigeria’s political parties.

The PDP’s Decline and Internal Struggles

Dickson expressed his emotional attachment to the PDP, acknowledging its historic role in Nigeria’s democratic development. However, he lamented the party’s steady decline and internal crisis, which he attributes to poor leadership and internal conflicts. He warned against the emergence of a one-party system in Nigeria, emphasizing that the country’s diversity makes such a scenario untenable.

“I could have defected to the APC even when I was governor, but I refused because Nigeria must not become a one-party state,” he stated. Dickson further explained that the PDP, which he once hoped would provide a credible opposition, has continued to dig itself deeper into crisis. He added that the party may not be in a position to be competitive in the 2027 general elections.

Symbolic Gestures and New Beginnings

During the event, the Protem Chairman of the party, Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwogeh, presented Dickson with the membership card numbered 001 and handed over the party’s flag, symbol, and authority to him. This gesture marked the official beginning of Dickson’s new political journey with the NDC.

Dickson urged Nigerians who desire a stronger democratic system to align with the NDC, which he believes is positioned to provide a credible alternative in the nation’s political landscape. He emphasized that the PDP was particularly appealing to him because it was an umbrella for all Nigerians—regardless of their size or strength.

A Commitment to Democracy

“I have been a faithful and committed member of the Peoples Democratic Party since 2005. The PDP was particularly appealing to me because it was an umbrella for all Nigerians – an umbrella for the big and the small, the strong and the weak,” he stated.

This defection highlights the ongoing shifts in Nigeria’s political environment. As the NDC begins to establish itself, it will be interesting to see how it navigates the challenges of building a strong opposition and competing with established parties like the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
