INEC Issues Certificates for FCT Council Chairs

INEC Completes Electoral Process with Certificates of Return for FCT Council Leaders

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially concluded the recent area council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by presenting certificates of return to the newly re-elected chairmen and councillors. This significant step marks the formal end of what many have described as a successful and transparent electoral process.

During the ceremony, held at INEC’s office, the FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Malam Aminu Idris, highlighted the importance of this milestone. He emphasized that the exercise was a culmination of a well-organized and peaceful election, which saw the emergence of new leaders across the region.

Idris pointed out that the presentation included six area council chairmen and their deputies, along with 62 councillors who were elected across the FCT. He extended his congratulations to all the winners, urging them to view their mandates as a responsibility to serve the people.

“Your election is a testament to the trust reposed in you by the electorate,” Idris said. “I encourage you to embrace your mandate with a sense of duty, working tirelessly to improve the conditions of your constituents.”

He also acknowledged the contributions of various stakeholders, including the Nigeria Police Force and political parties, for their roles in ensuring a peaceful and conclusive election. Their efforts were instrumental in maintaining order and upholding the integrity of the electoral process.

New Leaders Take Oath, Express Commitment to Service

Following the presentation of certificates, several newly elected officials took to the media to express their gratitude and outline their plans for the future. Among them was Christopher Maikalangu, the re-elected chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

Maikalangu described the day as the “final bus stop” of the election cycle, expressing deep appreciation to God and the electorate for their support. He emphasized his commitment to continue the developmental initiatives he had started during his previous term.

“One of my key promises is to allocate 80 per cent of our projects and programmes to rural communities,” Maikalangu stated. “Anytime you talk about local government, you are talking about local people. As usual, I am going to give the rural areas 80 per cent because most of my activities are centered there.”

He further pledged to ensure that the people of AMAC would benefit from the dividends of democracy. “I want to thank them for giving me their votes, and I will give them back those dividends of democracy,” he added.

Focus on Rural Development and Community Engagement

Maikalangu’s remarks reflect a broader trend among the newly elected leaders, who have emphasized the importance of addressing the needs of rural communities. This focus on grassroots development is seen as a crucial step in strengthening local governance and improving the quality of life for residents.

By prioritizing rural areas, these leaders aim to bridge the gap between urban and rural populations, ensuring that all citizens benefit from the progress made in the FCT. This approach not only fosters inclusivity but also promotes sustainable development across the region.

Looking Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities

As the new leaders take office, they face both challenges and opportunities. The success of the electoral process has set a positive precedent, but the real test lies in their ability to deliver on their promises. Effective governance, transparency, and accountability will be essential in maintaining public trust and achieving meaningful progress.

The role of civil society, media, and other stakeholders will also be critical in holding these leaders accountable and ensuring that their actions align with the interests of the people they serve.

In conclusion, the recent elections in the FCT have marked a significant moment in the country’s democratic journey. With the successful completion of the electoral process, the stage is now set for the new leaders to make a lasting impact on the lives of their constituents.
