How Sports Dominated the Niger Delta Games

A Showcase of Talent and Potential

The recently concluded Niger Delta Games in Benin City, the capital of Edo State, served as a platform for Nigeria’s athletics to display the promising future of the country’s track and field. Hosted by Edo State, the second edition of the regional games saw the state securing 52 gold medals, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting era in Nigerian athletics.

Among the many highlights of the event, the athletics competitions stood out, particularly the thrilling performances on the final day. Delta State emerged as a dominant force, overcoming strong competition from Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River States. The athletes from Delta State secured 13 gold medals, mostly in sprints and relays, while Edo State excelled in the field events. Meanwhile, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States shared the honors in middle and long-distance races.

“Nobody can take it from Delta State in athletics; they have a very good structure that produces quality athletes every year,” said Mutiu Oluwa, Edo State Athletics coach. His words reflected the consensus among observers who were impressed by the level of preparation and talent displayed by the athletes.

Just before the closing ceremony, Delta State solidified its dominance by winning three out of the four relay gold medals. However, Akwa Ibom State managed to prevent a complete sweep by winning the men’s 4x400m race.

“The athletes gave it everything that they had because everyone wanted to make a statement,” said former Nigerian sprint champion Seun Ogunkoya. “This is good for Nigeria athletics. Looking at the quality of the contest and running talents, the competition was very encouraging. This is just the start, and I believe with many more to come, this country can boast of many athletes in the near future.”

Star Performers and Memorable Moments

Several athletes captured the attention of spectators throughout the games. Ejiro Peters delivered a standout performance, winning a sprint double in the women’s 100m and 200m, as well as the 4x100m relay. Similarly, Osama Chibueze repeated his success for Delta State by securing a sprint double and the 4x100m gold.

In the 400m, David Udoh of Cross River State made a significant impact by winning the men’s 400m and contributing to Cross River State’s victory in the men’s 4x400m. Treasure Okereke also played a crucial role in Delta State’s success, winning the women’s 400m and helping the team secure the women’s 4x400m gold.

Akwa Ibom’s Hephzibah Okon made waves in the women’s 800m, but her attempt at a double was thwarted by Cross River’s Godsmind Eteng in the 1500m. Meanwhile, Treasure Omosivwe showcased her skill in the women’s high jump, matching her personal best of 1.75m to win gold for Edo State.

Organizational Efforts and Future Prospects

The smooth running of the athletics events was ensured by the coordination between the organizing committee and the technical team. Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, chairman of the organizing committee and also the chairman of the Delta State Athletics Association, worked closely with Enefiok Odo-Obong, the head of the technical committee.

Ikpokpo highlighted the efforts of the Scouting and Mentorship Committee, which monitored the events across all venues. The committee is expected to provide recommendations on the next steps for developing athletic talent in the region.

The Niger Delta Games not only showcased the current talent in Nigerian athletics but also provided a glimpse into the future. With emerging stars and strong state support, the country is on a promising path toward producing world-class athletes. The competition has set the stage for continued growth and development in the sport.
