Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers Foils Attempt to Send Baby’s Corpse via Courier
The Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has revealed how it successfully prevented a suspected ritualist from sending the corpse of a one-year-old baby through a courier service. The incident highlights the growing concerns around illegal activities disguised as legitimate logistics operations.
Ibrahim Bako, the Coordinator of NURTW, Area 1, Garki in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), shared this information during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. According to Bako, the suspect attempted to send a parcel that concealed the baby’s body to Gwagwalada, a satellite town within the FCT. This act was part of a broader pattern of criminal behavior that the union has encountered over the years.
Bako spoke about the experiences of some of the union members who are registered to operate courier and logistics services. He emphasized that such activities are not only dangerous but also illegal. “From our previous experiences, we have seized cocaine and other hard drugs,” he said. “We have also discovered a corpse of a year-old baby being sent to Gwagwalada in the FCT as well as two riffles, among others.”
The contraband items, along with the individuals involved in attempting to transport them, were handed over to the police for further investigation. Some of the suspects are currently in prison, according to Bako.
Legal Framework for Courier and Logistics Services
According to reports from NAN, transporters who are registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and have obtained a license from the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST)’s Courier Regulatory Department are permitted to operate courier and logistics services. This legal framework aims to ensure that all courier operations are conducted in a transparent and secure manner.
However, Bako stressed the importance of following the right channels when it comes to delivering goods through courier and logistics services. He warned against using unregistered or unauthorized services, which could pose serious risks to both individuals and communities.
Challenges Faced by the Union
Despite the existence of these regulations, the NURTW continues to face challenges in ensuring that all courier services adhere to the law. The union has been actively working to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal activities disguised as legitimate business operations. They have also been collaborating with law enforcement agencies to identify and apprehend those involved in such acts.
Some of the most alarming incidents include the discovery of human remains and weapons being transported through courier services. These findings have raised concerns about the potential involvement of criminal networks in the logistics sector.
The Role of the Union
The NURTW plays a crucial role in monitoring and regulating the activities of its members. By maintaining a close relationship with the police and other relevant authorities, the union is able to respond quickly to any suspicious activity. This proactive approach has helped prevent several incidents that could have had serious consequences.
In addition to their efforts in combating illegal activities, the union also provides support and guidance to its members on best practices for operating courier and logistics services. This includes training on safety protocols, legal compliance, and customer service standards.
Conclusion
The recent incident involving the attempt to send a baby’s corpse through a courier service underscores the need for vigilance and strict adherence to legal procedures in the logistics industry. The NURTW’s actions demonstrate their commitment to protecting both their members and the public from the dangers posed by illegal activities. As the union continues to work closely with authorities, they remain dedicated to ensuring that all courier and logistics operations are conducted safely and responsibly.
