The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 has undergone a significant change in its schedule. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently announced that the tournament will now take place from 25 July to 16 August 2026, rather than the originally planned dates of 17 March to 3 April 2026. This decision was made public on Thursday through the CAF’s official website.
There have been ongoing discussions and speculation about the potential postponement of the event, especially after Morocco, the original host country, faced challenges in fulfilling its obligations as the host for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2026. A South African government official reportedly expressed the country’s willingness to step in as an alternative host. However, these plans did not materialize, leading to uncertainty around the WAFCON 2026 schedule.
Despite the rumors, several participating nations, including Nigeria’s Super Falcons, have continued to prepare rigorously for the tournament. The Super Falcons are the defending champions, having won the competition a record 10 times. Their presence in the tournament is a key highlight, and their preparation efforts have remained undeterred by the scheduling changes.
CAF explained that the rescheduling was driven by “unforeseen circumstances.” In a statement, the organization emphasized that the new dates were agreed upon after consultations with FIFA and other stakeholders. The decision aims to ensure the success of the tournament, which will mark the 14th edition of the women’s flagship football competition in Africa.
The revised schedule allows for better coordination with other international events and ensures that all teams and organizers can focus on delivering a high-quality competition. CAF also confirmed that preparations for the tournament are already underway, with all parties involved expressing confidence in its success.
The delay in the tournament’s start date may impact the schedules of national teams, as well as the availability of key players for club competitions. However, CAF has assured that the new dates are designed to optimize the conditions for all participants.
With the Super Falcons as the reigning champions, fans across Africa are eagerly awaiting the tournament. The rescheduling also provides additional time for teams to finalize their preparations and for organizers to implement necessary logistical measures.
As the countdown begins for the 2026 edition, the focus remains on ensuring that the WAFCON continues to be a platform for showcasing top-tier women’s football in Africa.
