A violent attack on the Gidan-Tama community in the Kachia Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State has left three residents injured and 14 others abducted, including a nursing mother and her two-month-old baby. The incident highlights the growing insecurity in the region, with bandits carrying out increasingly brazen attacks.
The attack took place on Wednesday at approximately 12:27 am, when a group of armed bandits entered the community with sophisticated weapons. According to a community leader who spoke on condition of anonymity, the bandits fired shots into the air and then stormed several homes. During the raid, three adult males were injured by stray bullets and taken to Kachia General Hospital for treatment.
In addition to the injured, the bandits reportedly abducted 13 villagers, along with a nursing mother and her infant. The leader stated that some local vigilantes attempted to confront the attackers but were forced to retreat after realizing the bandits were better armed.
“This was the second attack within ten days,” the community leader said. He mentioned that earlier in the week, six people working at Fadama farms in the area had been kidnapped. The leader also referenced a similar attack in the neighboring Janjala community, which occurred just a week prior.
The recent violence in Gidan-Tama is part of an ongoing trend of banditry in Kaduna State. Last Saturday, bandits attacked the Janjala community in the Kagarko LGA, abducting a vigilante, his wife, and 12 others. These incidents have raised concerns about the security situation in the region, with many communities feeling vulnerable to further attacks.
A security source, who also chose to remain anonymous, confirmed the attack and said that both police operatives and local vigilantes are actively searching the forests around the Sabon-Kurutu axis in Kachia in an attempt to locate and rescue the abducted individuals.
Despite the efforts, no official statement has been released by the Kaduna State Police Command as of the time of this report. DSP Hassan Mansur, the spokesperson for the command, has not yet responded to the incident.
The Gidan-Tama community is now in a state of heightened fear and uncertainty. Residents are worried about the safety of their loved ones, especially the nursing mother and her baby, who were among those taken during the attack. Many are calling for increased security measures and support from local authorities.
The community leader emphasized that the repeated attacks have created a climate of fear. “People are scared to go out at night, and even during the day, they are cautious,” he said. “We need more help from the government and security agencies to protect our lives and property.”
As the search for the abducted individuals continues, there are growing calls for a more coordinated response to the banditry crisis. Experts suggest that addressing the root causes of the violence, such as poverty and lack of employment opportunities, is essential to preventing future attacks.
Local leaders are urging the government to take immediate action to restore peace and security in the region. They also emphasize the importance of strengthening community-based security initiatives, such as vigilante groups, to better protect vulnerable populations.
The situation in Kaduna remains precarious, with frequent reports of bandit attacks across various LGAs. The lack of a comprehensive security strategy has left many communities exposed to threats. As the investigation into the Gidan-Tama attack continues, the focus remains on rescuing the abducted individuals and ensuring the safety of the local population.
