Adamawa Residents Flee as Boko Haram Threat Looms

Escalating Tensions in Shuwari-Kirchinga

Residents of Shuwari-Kirchinga town in Adamawa State are fleeing the area due to rising tensions and uncertainty following a Boko Haram attack that claimed 22 lives in Madagali Local Government Area. The incident has left the community in a state of fear, with many seeking refuge elsewhere for safety.

Kirchinga, which is the political ward and hometown of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has long been vulnerable to terrorist attacks because of its proximity to the Sambisa Forest. This forest lies in the northern part of the state and borders Borno State, making it a hotspot for militant activities.

In separate telephone interviews, some residents described the security situation as fragile and precarious. They expressed concern that terrorists can strike at any time without resistance, emboldening them to commit further atrocities. The lack of effective security measures has led to a sense of helplessness among the people.

Livinus Moses, a resident, shared his experience of relocating his family and belongings to Yola, the state capital, for safety. He lamented that fear and uncertainty have gripped the people, affecting their daily lives. Moses also mentioned that all his animals, including cows and goats, were taken by the terrorists during last week’s invasion of the town. He added that residents are leaving en masse in search of peace of mind.

Ejandri Papka of Shuwari voiced his dismay over what he called the ‘kid-glove’ manner in which security agencies are handling the situation. He claimed that the military had been alerted about the impending attack but only arrived after the unfortunate incident on what he referred to as a ‘Black Tuesday.’ Papka said he had moved his family and property to Mubi following the traumatic experience.

Auwal Yakubu highlighted the devastating impact of the attack, noting that over a hundred herds of cattle and sheep were lost. He mentioned that many residents have relocated to Mubi, Michika, Yola, Shuwa, and Gombi for safety.

Maina Ularamu, the former Chairman of Madagali Local Government Council, confirmed that villagers are gradually leaving the area, and the town is becoming a shadow of itself. He urged authorities to address the situation urgently before it worsens.

The Chairman of Madagali LGA, Musa Shashi, did not respond to calls or text messages seeking his reaction. However, Governor Fintiri, who visited the town, assured traumatized residents that his administration is collaborating with the federal government to find a lasting solution to the security challenges.

Fintiri was recently seen at the office of the Minister of Defence, a move believed to be connected to efforts to address the situation. His visit to the affected area shows a commitment to resolving the ongoing crisis.

As the situation continues to unfold, the community remains on edge, hoping for swift action from authorities to restore stability and ensure their safety. The ongoing conflict has not only caused loss of life but also disrupted the lives of countless families, leading to displacement and economic hardship.

The international community and local organizations are closely monitoring the developments in the region. There is a growing call for increased support and resources to combat terrorism effectively and protect vulnerable communities.

With the threat of further attacks looming, the need for a coordinated and comprehensive response has never been more critical. The residents of Shuwari-Kirchinga are waiting for tangible steps to be taken to secure their future and bring an end to the cycle of violence.
