Abduction of Six Muslims During Taraweeh Prayers in Kaduna
Bandits have carried out a shocking abduction of six Muslim residents while they were observing Taraweeh prayers inside a mosque in the Azara community of Kachia Local Government Area (LGA) in Kaduna State. The incident has left the local community in a state of fear and uncertainty, raising concerns about security in the region.
According to Tanimu Ibrahim, a resident of Azara, the attack took place on Thursday. He described how the bandits entered the community and fired shots into the air before taking away six adults—four men and two women. The attackers also targeted another house during their escape, abducting two more individuals. However, those two victims managed to flee as they were being led into the bush.
“Ibrahim shared that ‘Two other victims were abducted, but as God would have it, they narrowly escaped on their way into the forest,’ he said.”
A community leader, who chose to remain anonymous, confirmed the abduction and provided the names of the victims: Saifullahi Harisu, Yakubu Yunusa, Abba Minkailu, Yusha’u Sadiku, Maryam Abdullahi, and Aisha Yakubu. The leader also revealed that the abductors contacted the community on Friday morning, demanding a ransom of N30 million for the release of the victims.
“Contact was established around 11 am on Friday when the bandits’ leader called and demanded N30 million and he immediately switching off the phone,” the leader said.
The police in the area have confirmed the abduction but have not provided further details. They referred the reporter to the state police command in Kaduna for more information. At the time of filing this report, the spokesperson for the Kaduna State Police Command, ASP Hassan Mansur, had yet to respond to the incident.
Community Response and Ongoing Concerns
The abduction has sparked widespread concern among the residents of Azara and surrounding areas. Many are questioning the effectiveness of current security measures and the ability of local authorities to prevent such attacks. The community is now on high alert, with many residents expressing fear for their safety.
Some key points from the incident include:
- Timing and Location: The attack occurred during a religious event, highlighting the vulnerability of communities during moments of peace and worship.
- Ransom Demand: The demand for N30 million indicates the level of organization and planning involved by the abductors.
- Escape of Two Victims: The fact that two individuals managed to escape adds to the complexity of the situation, suggesting that the bandits may have been in a hurry or under pressure.
Impact on the Region
This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence and insecurity in the region. Over the years, Kaduna State has witnessed numerous attacks attributed to various groups, including armed bandits and militants. The recent abduction has further intensified fears among residents, particularly in rural areas where access to security forces is limited.
The community is now calling for increased police presence and better coordination between local authorities and security agencies. There are also calls for greater public awareness and community-based initiatives to prevent future attacks.
As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on the safety of the abducted individuals and the need for swift action from the authorities. The community awaits updates and hopes for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
