Political Tensions and Calls for Peace in Oyo State
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State has raised concerns over the growing political tensions within the state, particularly following recent incidents of violence during a PDP congress. The party’s state chairman, Michael Okunlade, issued a statement urging the PDP to avoid turning Oyo into a battleground as the nation approaches the 2027 general elections.
Okunlade emphasized the importance of preserving Oyo’s reputation as the “Pace-Setter State” and one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria. He called on all political parties to focus their campaigns on substantive issues rather than resorting to violence or unrest.
Violence During PDP Congresses
According to reports, hoodlums suspected to be political thugs attacked local government congresses organized by a faction of the PDP loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. These events took place across Oyo State on Saturday, with several vehicles destroyed by unidentified attackers.
The PDP in Oyo State is currently divided into two factions. One faction supports Nyesom Wike, while the other aligns with the state governor, Seyi Makinde. The violence occurred during the congresses organized by the Wike-aligned faction, which were meant to be peaceful gatherings but instead turned into scenes of chaos.
SDP’s Response and Call for Stability
Okunlade stated that the SDP became aware of the violence through radio and social media reports. He expressed concern over the situation and urged the PDP to avoid using the state as a battleground in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
“We appeal to all political parties within the state to concentrate their campaigns on substantive issues,” he said. “Furthermore, we caution the PDP against turning the state into a battleground in the run-up to the 2027 elections. The party should coordinate its activities in the best interest of residents.”
He also called on the Nigeria Police Force in the state to take action against political figures who misuse their influence to incite unrest.
“This also constitutes a call to the state police to caution major political figures against misusing their influence for personal advantage and inciting chaos. We implore law enforcement authorities to diligently monitor the activities of all political actors as the 2027 elections approach,” he added.
Commitment to Peace and Unity
The SDP chairman reaffirmed his party’s commitment to peace and unity among its members and supporters. He urged all SDP members to remain loyal and dedicated as they prepare to assume leadership in 2027.
“No form of indiscipline among members will be tolerated,” he concluded.
