Lions Star Lachie Neale Puts Personal Turmoil Aside as AFL Season Looms
As the Brisbane Lions gear up to defend their premiership title, star midfielder Lachie Neale is facing a challenging personal chapter alongside his professional commitments. With the AFL season opener against the Western Bulldogs fast approaching on Saturday, March 7, Neale has shared a rare glimpse into his intense pre-season training regime. However, a closer inspection of a recent photograph from the weights room revealed a poignant detail: the absence of his wedding ring, signalling the significant personal upheaval he has endured following the breakdown of his marriage during the AFL off-season.
Rumours of marital strife began to surface in December, when Neale’s wife, Jules, alluded to a profound sense of betrayal, hinting at an alleged affair involving a close friend. This led to a swift and public distancing on social media, with Jules removing Lachie from her platforms and unfollowing both him and the individual linked to the scandal. The situation made it clear that a quiet reconciliation was not on the cards. Jules has since relocated back to Perth with their two young children, Piper and Freddie, while their former Brisbane residence is reportedly being prepared for auction.

In early January, Neale publicly confirmed the separation, issuing an apology for letting his family down. This personal crisis also prompted him to step down from his co-captaincy role at the Brisbane Lions as he navigated the ensuing fallout. Jules, meanwhile, has focused on family life in Perth, sharing messages of resilience and embracing new beginnings.
Neale, originally from South Australia, first moved to Perth after being drafted by Fremantle. It was in Perth that he spent seven seasons and met Jules. Despite the significant personal changes, Neale has publicly stated his commitment to the Brisbane Lions, reaffirming his dedication to the club for the upcoming season and beyond, even amidst speculation about a potential return to Western Australia.
When questioned in January about the possibility of a move back to Western Australia in 2027, Neale expressed that such considerations were premature. “I haven’t really considered that yet,” he stated. He elaborated that contract negotiations would naturally be a factor, and decisions would be made in due course. “My decision was always going to be put on hold with my contracts regardless, so we’ll work that out in the next six months. We’ve got a bit of time. I’m going to be here (in Brisbane) this season coming up.”

Neale emphasised his current focus: “Fully committed to putting everything I can into footy, getting into training.” He recently made a trip to Perth to spend time with his children, including his daughter Piper, who recently embarked on her first day of school. Jules shared a series of photos on Instagram, captioned “that’s some lemonade,” offering insight into her healing journey. Notably, her posts included footage of Lachie engaging with their children, suggesting a continued emphasis on co-parenting despite their separation.
Brisbane coach Chris Fagan has lauded Neale’s dedication, noting that the star midfielder is experiencing his best pre-season in years, despite the significant personal challenges he is facing. “To Lachie’s credit, in terms of the way that he’s training and going about things, he’s having his best pre-season in a long while,” Fagan commented. He highlighted Neale’s improved physical condition, noting that he finished the previous season without injury, allowing for a full and uninterrupted pre-season.
“Normally, he’s finished seasons quite injured and been in rehab, but this year he had no injury at the finish,” Fagan continued. “He’s been able to train fully and in the best shape he’s been in for ages in terms of setting himself up for a good football season. He’s in a good place at the moment, obviously got a bit going on personally, but he seems to be coping with that pretty well.” This resilience and focus suggest Neale is determined to contribute significantly to the Lions’ campaign as they aim for back-to-back premierships.
