Glasner’s Humble Pie for Palace Fans

Glasner Hits Back at Crystal Palace Fans Amidst Relegation Fears

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has launched a scathing critique of the club’s supporters, expressing his disappointment and disbelief at calls for his dismissal during the recent Conference League draw against Zrinjski Mostar in Bosnia. The Austrian coach, currently under immense pressure as Palace find themselves embroiled in a Premier League relegation battle, did not hold back when addressing the chants directed at him.

The Eagles have endured a turbulent period, securing only one victory in their last eleven Premier League fixtures. This dismal run has been compounded by a humiliating FA Cup exit at the hands of sixth-tier outfit Macclesfield, a result that sent shockwaves through English football. With the club’s hierarchy reportedly contemplating Glasner’s future, the manager’s latest comments have only intensified the scrutiny surrounding his tenure.

Glasner, who famously guided Crystal Palace to FA Cup glory last season, acknowledged the ongoing speculation about his position. However, he appeared unyielding in his response to the disgruntled fanbase.

“I didn’t expect the fans to carry me through London after winning the trophy (FA Cup) so they can say and sing whatever they want,” Glasner stated, his tone suggesting a stark contrast between past adulation and present criticism. He stressed the importance of humility, a trait he believes some supporters have unfortunately forgotten.

A Call for Humility and Perspective

The manager urged fans to remember the club’s journey and maintain a grounded perspective, particularly during challenging times.

“I always say the most important thing is to stay humble and I think it’s the same for the fans,” Glasner remarked. “Never forget where you have come from. The few who are so critical in this situation are not humble any more and have forgotten where they have come from. Usually in life you get punished for this.”

Glasner suggested that the club’s recent successes, including their historic FA Cup triumph and a club-record unbeaten run of 19 games between April and October, might have inadvertently inflated expectations, leading to an inability to cope with current struggles.

“The expectations have completely changed and we cannot deal with it as a team and our fans are dealing even worse,” he asserted.

Players Also Under Fire

The manager also directed his criticism towards his own squad, lamenting a perceived lack of focus and commitment. He indicated that some players might be preoccupied with their future prospects rather than their immediate performances on the pitch.

“I feel many players think they have to move on and some are looking at where they will play next year rather than where they are playing right now,” Glasner added, highlighting a potential disconnect within the team.

Despite the mounting pressure and the club’s ongoing review of his position, Glasner is expected to be in charge when Crystal Palace host Wolves on Saturday. He maintained that he has consistently given his best for the club and played a “small part” in what he described as Palace’s “best time in their history.”

“It would have been easy for me to have stepped back earlier – there have been many opportunities,” Glasner concluded. “But I didn’t because I felt responsible for the players.”

The coming days are likely to be crucial for both Oliver Glasner and Crystal Palace as they navigate this turbulent period. The manager’s defiant stance against both fans and players suggests a determined, albeit controversial, approach to steering the club through its current difficulties. The loyalty of the fanbase, once a source of strength, now appears to be a point of contention, adding another layer of complexity to an already precarious situation at Selhurst Park. The team’s performance in the upcoming matches will undoubtedly be under intense scrutiny, with the club’s hierarchy observing closely to determine the best course of action.
