Dolphins Duo Tomkins Return from Injury Exile

Dolphins Bolstered by Dual Tom Returns as Finals Dream Ignites

The Dolphins are set to receive a massive shot in the arm with the long-awaited return of two key players, both named Tom, as the club eyes a maiden NRL finals appearance. The return of prop Tom Flegler and captain Tom Gilbert from significant injury layoffs signals a potent boost to the team’s aspirations for the upcoming season.

Flegler’s Gruelling Road Back

Prop Tom Flegler is slated to make his first appearance in a staggering 677 days when the Dolphins face the Gold Coast Titans in a trial match on Thursday night. Flegler has endured a protracted and arduous recovery period following nerve damage to his left shoulder. This return marks a significant milestone in his rehabilitation, with the club eager to see the powerful forward back on the field.

Gilbert’s Resilient Comeback

Joining Flegler in the trial will be Dolphins captain Tom Gilbert. Gilbert’s last outing was in round 11 of the 2025 season, after which he required surgery for a ruptured pectoral muscle and a labrum tear. This injury followed an extended period on the sidelines, having missed the entirety of the 2024 season due to a knee reconstruction and a significant portion of 2023 with a shoulder complaint.

The prospect of Flegler and Gilbert, two prominent Queensland forwards, playing together for the Dolphins for the first time is generating considerable excitement. Their only prior experience in the same senior side was during game one of the 2023 State of Origin series for the Maroons. Now, the focus is on them building a strong partnership at the club level.

Embracing the Return: A Shared Sentiment

Both players acknowledge the significance of their impending return and the importance of the trial match in regaining match fitness and rhythm.

“We obviously both haven’t played a lot of footy for a while and sometimes trial matches are about getting out there and getting a feel,” Gilbert commented to AAP. “For both of us, any little taste of playing again is a really special moment and something that I don’t take for granted. I am going to enjoy it.”

Gilbert expressed his anticipation of running out alongside the dynamic Flegler, while also managing expectations regarding immediate impact.

“There is no expectation on Tommy and the level he can get back to. We know he will get there eventually and we know it will take time,” Gilbert stated. “It’s not an easy thing what Tom has been through physically and mentally. We know once he comes out the other side of all the challenges… he will be that great footy player we know.”

He emphasised the supportive environment within the Dolphins camp. “We won’t place pressure on him but we will support him and encourage him. There will be mistakes but (he) will be bounce back, go again and we will have one of the best props in the game playing for us.”

Gilbert’s Personal Journey of Recovery and Re-engagement

Captain Gilbert has also navigated his own set of challenges during his recovery. He views the 10 games he managed to play last year as a valuable stepping stone.

“I was lucky last year that after my big layoff, I got back into the routine and grind,” he explained. “I had a bit more of a feel for it and this pre-season I was able to do full training bar a couple of sessions. I feel more confident than I have in years both physically and mentally.”

This renewed confidence has reignited his passion for the sport. “I am recharged. I love footy. I didn’t love it for a while but now I am excited for what the future holds.”

Versatility and Leadership: Gilbert’s Outlook

Looking ahead to the season, Gilbert highlighted his intended versatility in playing positions.

“Each week I’ll have different roles but I just want to play great footy and lead the team into a good season,” he concluded. His ability to contribute in the middle and in the back-row will undoubtedly add depth and flexibility to the Dolphins’ lineup as they strive to make their mark on the NRL. The dual return of these prominent players is a significant moment for the club, signalling a strong intent to compete at the highest level.
