NRL Eyes World Domination Talks Intensify

NRL Eyes Global Leap: Beyond Vegas to New Horizons

The National Rugby League (NRL) is setting its sights on a truly international future, with chief executive Andrew Abdo declaring global expansion a “realistic” aspiration. Following the successful foray into Las Vegas, the league is now actively exploring business cases for taking matches to a variety of new markets, aiming to cultivate long-term fan bases across the globe.

While the concept of a dedicated “global round” remains a possibility, the NRL is keen to host games in diverse locations such as Japan, Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom. This strategic move is driven by a clear objective: to globalise rugby league and win over fans worldwide.

“We’ve proven with Las Vegas that we’re able to defy the impossible and make something that’s not only economically viable but actually incredibly transformative in terms of our engagement with overseas viewers, so it is realistic,” Abdo stated at the NRL season launch in Sydney.

The success of the Las Vegas double-header, which will mark its third consecutive year opening the NRL season at Allegiant Stadium, has provided a powerful demonstration of the league’s capability to execute major international events. The significant turnout of approximately 20,000 Australian fans travelling to Vegas highlights the potential for tourism and engagement that other countries could benefit from.

“There are a few constraints we need to consider like time of year, time differences and travel, but we have proven how much we can deliver major events and how much our fans love to travel,” Abdo explained. “There are a lot of conversations that are happening, and it’s very real.”

The NRL is open to staging international fixtures at various points throughout the season, not solely confined to the opening round, acknowledging that flexibility in scheduling can optimise engagement and minimise disruption. Factors such as time zones and weather will be carefully considered to ensure the best possible experience for players and fans alike.

Abdo and ARLC chairman Peter V’landys have engaged in discussions with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, drawing insights from the American football giant’s approach to international expansion. The NFL’s recent announcement of an Australian fixture in 2026 underscores the growing global interest in major sporting codes. The NFL’s strategy of assigning teams to specific countries for their global markets program, aimed at fostering sustained interest rather than one-off events, is a model the NRL is closely examining.

“We’re taking a close look at what the Premier League in the UK does and what the NFL does with these massive global competitions and how they take the game to new markets,” Abdo commented. “It has a multitude of benefits – mainly around fan acquisition – but also around other synergies that the clubs benefit from as well.”

Future of All Stars: Awaiting Broadcast Deal Clarity

Discussions surrounding the future of the culturally significant NRL All Stars concept are currently on hold, with any decisions to be made once the new broadcast deal is finalised. The event, a cornerstone of the rugby league calendar, has faced calls for its repositioning, potentially to Grand Final week or another slot, to ensure the availability of the best Indigenous and Māori players.

“It’s definitely a constructive debate,” Abdo acknowledged, speaking ahead of the recent All Stars clash. “The question around season structure is an important one, and we’re constantly thinking about it and looking at it.”

The upcoming period is a pivotal one for the NRL, with new teams set to enter the competition and the commencement of a new broadcast cycle in 2028. These developments present a valuable opportunity for the commission to explore different permutations and structures for the season. Such considerations will aim to balance player wellbeing with the continued growth and significance of the franchises that hold deep meaning for both players and fans.
