A Romantic Proposal and the Unintended Silhouette
A recent silhouette photo of sports presenter Danika Mason and ex-NRL star Liam Knight has sparked a wave of reactions online, with many fans expressing both admiration and humor. The image, taken from a beach in Sardinia, captured the couple in a romantic pose that quickly became the subject of widespread banter.
Knight proposed to Mason during their holiday in Italy, and the Channel Nine personality was thrilled with her dazzling ring. However, the moment took an unexpected turn when the photo began circulating on social media, leading to a flurry of comments and jokes.
One of the most notable responses came from the Rugby League Sin Bin Facebook page, which humorously remarked: “Congratulations to Nicho Hynes & Nathan Cleary on their engagement.” The post playfully suggested that the image perfectly captured the best of both players’ features, jokingly combining Cleary’s chin with Hynes’ long hair for a prosperous love story.
Another page, Retro Rugby League, also joined in the fun by jokingly congratulating “Mary and Nathan Cleary,” referencing Matildas fan favorite Mary Fowler and the Panthers superstar halfback. These lighthearted jabs were met with amusement by many fans, who enjoyed the playful teasing.
Fans Weigh In on the Engagement News
The engagement news didn’t go unnoticed by rugby league supporters, who couldn’t resist making their own comments. One fan joked, “Nathan Cleary is half that size and has double that chin,” while another quipped, “Nicho is looking fit.” A third person added, “Can spot that (Cleary) chin from a million miles away.”
Interestingly, Cleary himself has shown a good sense of humor about the attention he receives regarding his chin. He recently mentioned that rival fans often tease him about the size of his “button” when he’s trying to convert tries from the sideline. Despite the comments, he finds them entertaining rather than offensive.
A New Beginning for Danika Mason and Liam Knight
Mason and Knight officially confirmed their relationship in July 2024 after months of speculation. They shared a heartfelt moment on social media, with Knight posting a photo of the couple cuddling and captioning it, “My life’s good.” This marked a significant turning point in Mason’s personal life, as she had previously gone through a difficult breakup.
In September 2023, Mason ended her engagement to her ex-fiancé, Todd Liubinskas, just three weeks before their planned wedding. The Daily Mail reported that Liubinskas later asked for the return of her diamond engagement ring, claiming it was a family heirloom. Mason kept the $1.5 million Maroubra home they shared and later confirmed the split was due to a “breakdown in trust.”
Reflecting on the experience, Mason told News Corp, “It certainly was an emotional rollercoaster.” She described the range of emotions she felt, from sadness to anger, but emphasized the importance of moving forward. “You’ve got no option, really… people would ask me, ‘Are you OK?’ And I’d say, ‘Not right now, but I will be.’”
Mason also sought professional help to cope with the emotional challenges and eventually found new love with Liam Knight. After Knight agreed to terms with the English team Hull FC in March, the couple began a long-distance relationship. Despite the distance, they have made the most of their time together, enjoying getaways overseas whenever possible.
