He added, ‘And hopefully I get to still play this game for a very long time and ultimately my goal is to play this for as long as I physically can. But there is life after it as well. Getting married was the coolest, it was the most important day of my life. I get to understand that what I do is not normal but I’d also be content with a different part of my life, however that may have looked.’

Allen also spoke about his desire to win his first Lombardi Trophy this season with the Bills. He compared the pursuit of a Super Bowl victory to Rory McIlroy’s quest to win the Masters. ‘I know as a man in my life I will be great but in doing what I do, how I have done it for my entire career, putting everything that I have into my job and winning a Super Bowl, it will always be the great white buffalo,’ he said.

‘That will sit with you for your entire life once you’re done playing football.’
