Tiger Woods, the legendary golfer, has once again found himself in the spotlight due to a recent car crash and subsequent health concerns. The incident has raised significant worries among his peers, particularly Jack Nicklaus, who is deeply concerned about Woods’ use of painkillers and his overall well-being.
Woods, 50, recently announced that he would be stepping away from the game to focus on his health and recovery after flipping his SUV and being arrested for DUI in Jupiter, Florida. This event has led to a growing concern about the golfer’s reliance on medication, with Nicklaus expressing his worries openly.
Nicklaus, the 18-time major winner, didn’t hold back when discussing Woods’ condition. He expressed his alarm at the golfer’s situation while also emphasizing his support for the 15-time major winner. It is believed that Woods has traveled to Zurich, Switzerland, to check into an ultra-private rehab facility.
“Sometimes you get, you know, too far down the line and you just need somebody to help you,” Nicklaus said. “I think he probably needs some help. And we all want to help him. We’re all on his side.”
He reiterated that he wasn’t lashing out at Woods, acknowledging that the golfer has had to rely on painkillers in the past due to previous injury crises. “Obviously, I feel bad for Tiger. I like Tiger. I don’t just like him, I like him a lot,” he added. “He’s been taking painkillers for a long time and I don’t know how much pain he’s in because I just don’t know. But I don’t think he’d be taking them if he didn’t need them.”
The police affidavit revealed that Woods was found “dazed and sweaty” with two opioid pills in his pocket. He was arrested for DUI, property damage, and failure to submit to a lawful test. During a field sobriety test, Woods was described as “limping and stumbling.” After completing several exercises, he was deemed unfit to drive.
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek stated that Woods was traveling at “high speeds” on a residential road and showed “signs of impairment.” Authorities could not determine how fast he was going but believe he had taken some kind of medication or drug.
Woods was described as lethargic and agreed to a breathalyzer test that showed no signs of alcohol. However, he refused a urine test and was arrested. Budensiek mentioned that Woods attempted to pass a pressure cleaner truck while driving on a two-lane road with a 30mph speed limit.
Following the incident, Woods is believed to have traveled to a facility in Zurich, Switzerland, on Friday—just one week after the accident. A judge granted him permission to leave the country for treatment, citing the need for more privacy than what is available in the United States.
His private jet landed in the Swiss city shortly after Woods announced in a statement that he would be “seeking treatment and focusing on my health.” While it is unclear whether Woods was on the plane as it headed to Europe, Switzerland is known for its luxurious private treatment facilities.
TMZ reports that some facilities in Zurich even offer “one-client admittance,” meaning only the individual would be at the facility, granting the privacy Woods desires.
Vanessa Trump, Woods’ girlfriend, broke her silence on the arrest, posting a supportive message on her Instagram account. Alongside a photo of the pair sharing an embrace, she wrote: “Love you.”
The Daily Mail understands that behind the scenes, Vanessa has been pushing Woods to get the best care possible and that she won’t stand for another repeat of the troubles that have plagued Woods’ life away from sport.
Last week’s car crash was the fourth occasion Woods has been involved in an accident since 2009. The first came when he drove into a fire hydrant outside his home, fleeing after ex-wife Elin Nordegren discovered he had been cheating. In 2017, he was arrested for DUI after being found asleep at the wheel. In 2021, he rolled his car at high speed in California, breaking his right leg in multiple places.
