Supermarket Leader Sounds Alarm on Fresh Produce

Australians Bracing for Significant Grocery Price Increases

Australians are being warned that they may soon face a 20 per cent increase in grocery prices, with the impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East affecting fuel supplies and, consequently, food costs. A supermarket executive has highlighted that this could mean higher prices for fruits, vegetables, meat, and milk for at least six months.

Fred Harrison, CEO of Ritchies, told the Daily Telegraph that shoppers should prepare for price hikes as retailers pass on rising costs. “We have suppliers who are putting on a fuel levy and we are absorbing that,” he said. “Prices are stable right now, but if this continues, prices will rise in the next two to three weeks.”

Sam Miller, an economist from NSW Farmers, suggested that the predicted 20 per cent increase might only be the beginning. Fuel costs are impacting both production and transportation, which means that items like onions, strawberries, mushrooms, kiwifruit, and pears could see price jumps of up to 10 per cent.

“People are saying this is worse than anything since the 1970s. It is hard to be optimistic,” Mr Miller said.

The Middle East is not only a major supplier of oil but also provides up to 45 per cent of the world’s urea, which is used in nitrogen fertiliser. This fertiliser is essential for high crop yields, particularly for wheat and vegetables. As a result, Australian consumers could soon pay 30 cents more per litre for homebrand milk due to shortages of fuel and fertiliser caused by the conflict.

Industry leaders have already written to Coles and Woolworths requesting a price increase. A two-litre bottle of homebrand full cream milk currently costs $3.20 at both supermarkets and could soon cost 60 cents more, allowing producers to also raise the prices of other brands while maintaining competitiveness.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently announced further cuts to the fuel excise after state and territory leaders agreed to pass on the GST windfall to motorists. However, Australia’s dairy farmers have also written to the Prime Minister, urging the sector to be recognized as a priority fuel user.

“Cows must be milked every day, milk must be collected every day, and it must reach processors and consumers quickly,” said Ben Bennett, president of the Australian Dairy Farmers.

Martin Stirling, CEO of Master Grocers Australia, highlighted that the Australian economy is too reliant on imports and called for government action to prevent similar crises in the future. Farmers across the country are paying over $3 per litre for diesel, presenting some of the toughest challenges, according to Paige Hatton, a cattle farmer from Wagga Wagga.

If the Strait of Hormuz, where 20 per cent of the world’s crude passes through, remains blocked, it would significantly impact the profitability of four out of five businesses, according to Chris Rodwell, CEO of the Australian Retail Council.

Coles has stated that it is trying to prevent cost rises from reaching the shelves, while Woolworths has nearly doubled the levy for independent truck drivers. Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong has criticized Iran for causing “economic pain” by closing the Strait of Hormuz.

“The longer this war goes on, the more significant the impact on the global economy will be,” she said.
