A Bold Critique from a Veteran Actor
A veteran actor has recently made headlines with his unfiltered comments about some of Hollywood’s most prominent figures, and among those criticized was Australia’s very own Margot Robbie. In an interview with The Times, Brian Cox, known for his sharp wit and no-nonsense attitude, took aim at several high-profile actors and directors, offering a scathing assessment of their work.
Cox’s remarks were particularly pointed when it came to Margot Robbie’s casting in the latest adaptation of Wuthering Heights. He expressed his disappointment, stating that the 1939 version of the film is one of his favorites. His critique of Robbie’s performance was delivered with a mock-Australian accent, where he impersonated her character, Cathy, in a humorous yet critical manner.
“I mean, I think there should be something more of the Gypsy about her but it’s wrong of me to judge,” Cox said. “It may be a brilliant film.” Despite his criticism, he acknowledged that Robbie’s casting might still result in a successful film.
Cox’s rant did not stop there. He continued to criticize a range of Hollywood stars, including Edward Norton, whom he described as a “pain in the arse,” Kevin Spacey as a “stupid, stupid man,” Quentin Tarantino as “meretricious,” Michael Caton-Jones as “a complete arsehole,” and David Hare as “see you next Tuesday.”
His criticisms extended beyond just actors, touching on the method acting approach used by some performers. He specifically mentioned Jeremy Strong, his co-star in Succession, whose use of the technique he found frustrating. “He’s a good actor, Jeremy. He’s a wonderful actor. It’s just all the b——- that goes with it. You watch children – they don’t say, ‘What’s my motivation?’ They just do it!”
This is not the first time Cox has shared his candid opinions about fellow actors. He has previously labeled Johnny Depp as “overrated” and expressed relief at having turned down a role in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Additionally, he criticized Ian McKellen, his former X-Men co-star, stating that his acting was “not to his taste.”
Despite his blunt comments, Cox has not faced any significant backlash so far. However, his wife, Nicole Ansari-Cox, has often warned him to be careful with his outspoken nature. “My wife keeps saying, ‘Brian, be careful. Brian, be careful.’” he recalled. But Cox seems undeterred, especially now that he is turning 80. “I think, ‘F–k it, I don’t want to be careful anymore! I’ll be 80 this year. F–k it! I’m gonna say what I want to say.’”
