A young man’s life was tragically cut short following a Spring Break incident that gained viral attention. Michael Brown, a 22-year-old from Nixon, Texas, succumbed to severe head injuries sustained in a car crash on March 14th. The accident occurred in the Gulf Coast town of Port Aransas, a popular destination for spring break festivities.
Brown had been a passenger in a 2012 Jeep Wrangler when the vehicle collided with a Tesla on State Highway 361. Tragically, just moments before the crash, video footage shared widely on social media captured Brown, shirtless, climbing out of the Jeep’s roof and engaging in twerking as the vehicle was in motion.
The driver of the Jeep, identified as 24-year-old Riley Rhoades, was subsequently arrested. Breathalyzer tests administered at the scene revealed blood alcohol content (BAC) levels of .14 and .12, significantly exceeding Texas’s legal limit of .08. Rhoades has been charged with intoxication assault and is currently being held at the Nueces County Jail with a $10,000 bond.
Following the collision, images depicted three individuals in swimsuits near the wreckage of the Jeep, while emergency medical services attended to an injured person on the roadway. Brown was pronounced dead last Friday morning after spending nearly a week in the hospital battling his injuries.
Friends and family have remembered Michael Brown as a vibrant and cherished individual. His energetic personality was frequently cited by those who knew him.
Shaver further elaborated that Brown “loved to just have fun and let loose.” An online fundraiser has been established to help cover funeral expenses, having already raised $660.
The shocking fatality has cast a shadow over Port Aransas, a town that braces for large crowds and increased activity each spring break. Mayor Wendy Moore acknowledged that while first responders are prepared for the influx of visitors, many safety concerns are unfortunately attributed to those visiting the area.
“We want those residents and visitors alike to know that we work really hard to keep these things isolated and keep them safe, and I hope they will be equally diligent about where they are in their surroundings,” Mayor Moore stated.
The Port Aransas Police Department reported 15 arrests for driving while intoxicated (DWI) during the current spring break season. To bolster enforcement efforts, additional assistance has been requested from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and DPS troopers.
Port Aransas Police Lt. Mike Hannon emphasized the community’s desire to avoid negative incidents. “What the community does not want here, what we are looking for, is bad conduct. unsafe conduct, people that are driving in an unsafe way. conducting themselves in an unsafe way,” Hannon explained.
He added that increased enforcement, including citations and arrests, is a strategic measure aimed at deterring individuals whose primary intention is to engage in reckless or unsafe behavior. The hope is that by making such conduct less appealing, those seeking to visit for negative reasons will reconsider their travel plans.
The tragic loss of Michael Brown serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with excessive revelry and impaired driving, particularly during crowded public events like Spring Break. Authorities continue their efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of both residents and visitors in Port Aransas.
