SMIC Charts Ambitious Growth Strategy for 2026, Focusing on Domestic Innovation and Market Share

Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC), China’s premier contract chipmaker, has unveiled a comprehensive action plan designed to propel its businesses and secure new avenues for growth in 2026. This strategic initiative underscores SMIC’s pivotal role in China’s ongoing pursuit of technological self-sufficiency within the critical semiconductor sector.

The plan, released concurrently with the company’s annual report for 2025, articulates a clear mission: “optimising existing stock and digging for new increments.” This dual approach signifies a commitment to maximizing the efficiency and output of current operations while actively exploring and cultivating emerging opportunities.

SMIC has identified two primary trends poised to fuel significant growth within the domestic semiconductor industry throughout the coming year. Firstly, the company anticipates a continued trend of supply chain repatriation, as global manufacturing networks re-evaluate their geographical dependencies and bring production closer to home. Secondly, SMIC expects a substantial wave of product replacement, where older, overseas-manufactured components will be supplanted by newer, domestically produced alternatives.

In response to these evolving market dynamics, SMIC intends to deepen its technical expertise in several specialized and high-demand areas. This includes a focused development in BCD (bipolar-CMOS-DMOS) technology, a sophisticated process that ingeniously merges the distinct advantages of three separate technologies onto a single integrated circuit. Furthermore, the company will bolster its capabilities in analogue chips, specialized memory chips, and microcontroller units (MCUs), all of which are crucial for a wide array of modern electronic devices.

The introduction of this new action plan occurs against a backdrop of considerable global semiconductor market strain. A pronounced memory chip super cycle, characterized by an aggressive ramp-up in advanced memory chip production to meet the insatiable demand from artificial intelligence data centers, is currently consuming a significant portion of global wafer capacity. This intense demand is consequently driving up production costs across the industry.

SMIC has acknowledged the disruptive influence of this memory chip super cycle. The company noted that the robust demand for memory, largely propelled by the AI revolution, is currently “squeezing” the available supply of memory chips destined for smartphones and other mid- to low-end consumer products. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity for SMIC to potentially fill some of this demand with its domestic production capabilities.

With its newly outlined action plan, SMIC is setting its sights high, aiming for sales growth that surpasses the industry average in 2026. This ambitious target follows SMIC’s earlier projection in February, which anticipated flat revenue for the first quarter of the year. This forecast was attributed to a decline in orders for lower-end chips, which was expected to be partially offset by the surging demand for chips powering AI applications.

The broader landscape of China’s semiconductor industry is characterized by rapid expansion. Over the past few years, Chinese chipmakers have been aggressively increasing their production capacity. This expansion is driven by the dual strategy of establishing entirely new production lines and significantly enhancing existing facilities, all while capitalizing on the burgeoning demand for AI-enabled technologies.

Data presented at Semicon China, the world’s largest semiconductor industry trade show, revealed compelling insights into China’s growing dominance in global wafer fabrication. By 2028, China’s share of global wafer fabrication capacity for mainstream processes is projected to reach an impressive 42 percent. This significant figure underscores the country’s accelerated ascent in the global semiconductor manufacturing arena.

Further projections from SEMI, the organizer of the Semicon China event, indicate that between 2028 and 2030, a total of 108 new wafer fabrication plants are expected to be constructed worldwide. Of these, a substantial 47 are slated for development within China, highlighting the nation’s strategic commitment to becoming a global leader in chip production. This expansion is not merely about quantity but also about building a robust and resilient domestic supply chain capable of supporting China’s technological ambitions. SMIC’s new action plan is a critical component of this overarching national strategy.
