Order Restored: Urgent Evacuation Mandated for Iwo Road Traders and Motorists
Ibadan, Nigeria – In a decisive move to reclaim order and alleviate chronic traffic congestion, the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has issued an immediate directive for all motorists and traders operating along the major thoroughfares surrounding Iwo Road in Ibadan, the state capital, to vacate these areas and relocate to the designated Iwo Road Bus Terminal Park. This stringent measure is a critical component of a broader strategy to restore traffic flow, enhance environmental cleanliness, and ensure the safety of commuters and residents alike.
The directive, communicated via a statement released on Thursday, underscored the persistent challenges faced due to the abandonment of the government-provided terminal facility. Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information, revealed that the Chairman of OYRTMA, Major Adekoya Adesagba, personally led an enforcement and inspection team to the Iwo Road Bus Terminal. This action was prompted by a deluge of reports indicating that numerous motorists and traders, who were expected to utilize the newly constructed terminal, had instead reverted to operating on the roadside.
Major Adesagba articulated the severe consequences of this continued roadside operation. “The persistent presence of traders on the roadside poses a significant risk of severe traffic congestion and potential accidents,” he stated. He elaborated that this practice directly diminishes the available space for vehicular movement, thereby exacerbating the likelihood of gridlock and increasing the frequency of traffic incidents.
Furthermore, the OYRTMA Chairman highlighted that the proliferation of informal parks and vehicles operating outside the officially designated terminal contributes to a pervasive sense of disorder and exacerbates existing traffic problems. “Such practices fundamentally undermine the very purpose for which the government invested in building this facility,” Adesagba remarked. He also pointed to a regrettable disunity among operators, noting that some had chosen to remain outside the terminal, allegedly based on affiliations with local government bodies. This internal division, he stressed, must be overcome for the collective benefit of improved traffic management.
Adesagba issued a fervent appeal for unity among all members of the Transport Workers Union and emphasized the paramount importance of strict adherence to government directives. “All motorists and traders are unequivocally instructed to relocate their operations fully into the bus terminal provided by the government,” he declared. A stern warning followed: “Under no circumstances should any individual or group be found operating outside the designated facility.”
The Oyo State Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to fostering orderliness, ensuring public safety, and implementing effective traffic management strategies across the entire state. The message was clear: continued defiance of these directives will not be tolerated.
The Iwo Road Bus Terminal: A Vision for Modern Urban Transport
The Iwo Road Bus Terminal stands as a testament to the Oyo State Government’s dedication to modernizing urban infrastructure and enhancing the lives of its citizens. As one of several state-of-the-art transport terminals constructed as part of a comprehensive urban renewal and traffic management initiative in Ibadan, the facility was meticulously designed with several key objectives in mind:
- Decongestion of Major Arteries: The primary aim was to alleviate the persistent traffic bottlenecks that plague the city’s busiest roads, particularly around the Iwo Road axis.
- Improvement of Public Transportation: By providing a centralized and organized hub, the terminal seeks to streamline public transport operations, making commuting more efficient and predictable for thousands of daily passengers.
- Creation of an Organized Environment: The terminal offers a structured and regulated space for commuters, commercial drivers, and traders, moving them away from hazardous and chaotic roadside conditions.
Despite the significant investment in this modern facility and its clear benefits, authorities have repeatedly encountered resistance and a preference among some transport operators and traders to continue their activities along the roadside. This persistent practice has unfortunately perpetuated the cycle of worsening traffic congestion and disrupted traffic flow, directly contradicting the intended purpose and benefits of the Iwo Road Bus Terminal. The current enforcement action by OYRTMA signifies a renewed determination to overcome these challenges and fully realize the vision of a more orderly and efficient transportation system in Ibadan.
