A 37-year-old nurse, Kehinde Adesanya, has been ordered into a 60-day pre-trial detention at the Ibara Correctional Centre in Abeokuta, Nigeria, following accusations of involvement in an unlawful abortion that allegedly resulted in the death of a 23-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Victoria Ariyo.
The arraignment took place on Thursday at the Magistrate Court in Isabo, Abeokuta. Adesanya faces a total of four charges, which include conspiracy, supplying drugs for the purpose of an illegal abortion, and murder.
According to police counsel Solomon Babalola, the alleged offenses are said to have occurred between January and March of 2026. The incidents are reported to have taken place in the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta. The prosecution contends that the drugs administered, allegedly supplied by Adesanya, ultimately led to the fatal outcome for Victoria Ariyo.
The formal charges presented in court are as follows:
Count I: Conspiracy to Commit Felony (Abortion)
This charge, filed under Section 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006, alleges that Adesanya conspired with others to commit the felony of abortion.
Count II: Unlawfully Attempting to Procure Abortion
Contrary to Section 230 of the Criminal Code, this count accuses Adesanya of unlawfully attempting to procure an abortion by supplying drugs to the deceased, Ariyo Victoria Olapeju.
Count III: Conspiracy to Commit Felony (Murder)
Under Section 324 of the Criminal Code, this charge posits that Adesanya engaged in a conspiracy to commit the felony of murder.
Count IV: Unlawfully Killing Ariyo Victoria Olapeju
This most serious charge, brought under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, alleges that Adesanya unlawfully caused the death of Ariyo Victoria Olapeju by administering drugs intended for an abortion.
Presiding over the proceedings was Magistrate O. Sam-Obaleye. The police counsel formally requested that Adesanya be remanded for a period of 60 days. This period is intended to allow for further investigation and the reception of advice from the state Director of Public Prosecutions.
The magistrate acceded to this request, issuing an order for the defendant to be held at the Ibara Correctional Centre. The case has been adjourned until May 26, 2026, for further hearings.
Further police reports have shed light on the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy. It is alleged that Victoria Ariyo was involved in a romantic relationship with Abass Olalekan, who serves as the NYSC Inspector for the Abeokuta South Local Government Area. This relationship is believed to be the origin of her pregnancy.
Abass Olalekan has also been apprehended and faced charges before Magistrate A.K. Araba on Monday. He was arraigned on two counts, specifically conspiracy and attempt to procure an abortion. Olalekan entered a plea of not guilty to the charges and was subsequently granted bail in the sum of N500,000.
The case highlights the serious legal ramifications associated with illegal abortion practices and the tragic consequences they can entail. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the full extent of the involvement of all parties concerned.
