Wike’s Drive: FCT’s Go-Getter Admin and Reckless Driving Menace

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike: A Visionary Administrator Facing a Growing Traffic Challenge

Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), stands out as a distinctive figure in Nigeria’s public administration landscape. His reputation as a tenacious and results-oriented leader precedes him, a trait honed through his impactful tenure as Minister of State for Education and his highly successful eight-year governorship of Rivers State. Wike is widely recognized for his no-nonsense approach and his unwavering commitment to achieving tangible outcomes, setting him apart from public servants who may merely espouse success without concrete action. During his time as governor, he earned the moniker “Mr. Project” due to his extensive infrastructure development projects across Rivers State. This same dedication to progress is now evident in the FCT, where significant strides in road infrastructure have been made under his leadership, reportedly surpassing the achievements of some predecessors over similar periods.

However, the commendable developmental efforts in the FCT are increasingly being overshadowed by a disturbing trend: a severe lack of adherence to traffic regulations. This growing problem of reckless driving is casting a negative light on the federal capital and, by extension, the nation. This concern was previously brought to the Minister’s attention, highlighting the habitual violation of traffic lights and the dangerous practice of driving against traffic. Such behaviour not only poses a grave risk to human lives but also projects an image of lawlessness to international visitors. The situation is particularly acute along the airport road, where drivers have become brazen, flouting rules on access lanes and now extending their disregard to express lanes.

Following a formal communication detailing these issues, pronouncements were issued by administration officials warning motorists against traffic violations and vowing to take action against offenders. Unfortunately, these warnings appear to have lacked substantiation through concrete enforcement. The absence of decisive action has, regrettably, emboldened drivers to continue their impunity, operating without fear of consequence. This persistent disregard for traffic laws, whether by drivers of private vehicles or commercial transport, including motorcycles and tricycles, has become a deeply entrenched habit. The tragic consequence of this unchecked behaviour is the loss of lives, as reports have indicated.

The writer recently had a harrowing personal encounter with this dangerous reality. On Saturday, October 25th, 2025, while en route to Garki for an official assignment, a near-fatal incident occurred close to Human Rights Radio, near the Games Village. An out-of-control driver struck a motorcycle rider, sending him flying directly into the path of the writer’s vehicle. It was a moment of sheer reflex and perhaps divine intervention that allowed the brakes to be applied in time, narrowly avoiding a catastrophic collision. This experience served as a stark reminder of the constant peril faced by innocent road users. Similar alarming encounters with drivers speeding against traffic on the airport road have also been experienced recently, further underscoring the pervasive nature of the problem.

The escalating boldness of vehicular and tricycle drivers, as well as motorcycle riders, in flouting traffic rules is a direct consequence of a perceived lack of governmental control, insufficient enforcement, and the absence of effective deterrent measures. This alarming trend not only exposes road users to avoidable risks but also significantly undermines the image of the FCT and Nigeria as a whole. The international perception of a nation is often shaped by the experiences of its foreign residents and visitors, and the chaotic state of our roads is a detrimental factor in this regard.

In light of the profound implications of this growing menace on societal well-being and Nigeria’s standing on the global stage, there is an urgent and compelling need for the Honourable Minister to address this matter with the seriousness and comprehensive solutions it demands. A multi-faceted approach, encompassing robust enforcement, public awareness campaigns, and potentially stricter penalties, is crucial to restoring order and safety to the FCT’s roads.
