Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has stepped down from his position as he prepares to run for the governorship of Bauchi State under the All Progressives Congress (APC). This move marks a significant shift in the political landscape, as Tuggar transitions from a national role to a state-level campaign.
The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the resignation on Monday through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa. According to Ebienfa, Tuggar submitted his resignation letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The minister’s decision was made in accordance with a presidential directive that requires all political appointees seeking elective offices in the 2027 general elections to step down by March 31, 2026.
“The minister has tendered his resignation in line with the directive,” the spokesperson said during a chat with diplomatic correspondents in Abuja. The directive, issued through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, applies to ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, and heads of federal agencies.
This directive is based on Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which aims to prevent conflicts of interest ahead of the 2027 polls. By requiring officials to resign before the deadline, the government ensures that those in public office do not leverage their positions for personal political gain.
Tuggar, who is 59 years old, is a seasoned diplomat and organisational analyst. He previously served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany and has held various roles in both the public and private sectors. His experience and background make him a formidable candidate in the upcoming Bauchi State governorship race.
His resignation signals an early alignment of key political figures ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly in Bauchi State, where the governorship contest is expected to draw significant attention. As the APC prepares for the election, Tuggar’s candidacy could influence the party’s strategy and messaging in the region.
The move also highlights the growing importance of state-level politics in Nigeria’s broader electoral framework. With the 2027 general elections approaching, political figures are increasingly focusing on securing strong bases at the state level. This trend is likely to shape the dynamics of future campaigns and alliances.
For now, Tuggar’s transition from a national to a state-level politician underscores the evolving nature of Nigerian politics. As he prepares for the governorship race, his next steps will be closely watched by both supporters and critics alike.
