President Bola Tinubu has given the go-ahead for a significant expansion of Nigeria’s Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG), now incorporating electric vehicles (EVs) into its mandate. This strategic pivot aims to solidify the nation’s commitment to a comprehensive clean mobility strategy, encompassing both gas-powered and electric transportation solutions across the country. The initiative will henceforth be known as the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV).
This rebranding signifies a more holistic approach to Nigeria’s energy transition in the transport sector. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed the development in a statement released on Thursday. The expanded mandate positions PiCNG & EV as the central coordinating body for Nigeria’s clean mobility efforts, a crucial step in reducing reliance on fossil fuels and fostering a more sustainable transportation ecosystem.
The core objectives of the expanded initiative include:
President Tinubu has further directed the Executive Chairman of PiCNG & EV to expedite the process of making vehicle conversion kits readily available to Nigerians. A critical aspect of this directive is ensuring that these conversion kits are offered at an affordable price, alleviating any financial burden on citizens seeking to transition to cleaner fuel alternatives.
To achieve this affordability and accessibility, PiCNG & EV is tasked with collaborating with CreditCorp Nigeria, various financial institutions, and other relevant partners. The goal is to devise cost-effective financing structures that will enable widespread public access to vehicle conversion services. This move is expected to democratize the adoption of cleaner transportation options.
In parallel with the CNG infrastructure expansion, the President has also called for the accelerated deployment of Mobile Refuelling Units. This measure aims to enhance the accessibility of CNG as a fuel source while permanent refuelling stations are being established and scaled up. This dual approach ensures immediate benefits for CNG users while laying the groundwork for long-term sustainability.
The statement emphasized the continued strategic importance of natural gas as a competitive fuel for transportation. Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves, estimated at over 200 trillion cubic feet, present a significant opportunity to lower transportation costs, bolster energy security, and conserve precious foreign exchange reserves that would otherwise be spent on importing refined petroleum products.
The inclusion of electric vehicles in the initiative’s scope underscores the government’s broader commitment to promoting affordable, efficient, and environmentally responsible mobility solutions. This dual-pronged approach leverages both indigenous resources (natural gas) and global technological advancements (electric vehicles) to achieve a balanced and sustainable energy future for the transportation sector.
The Presidential CNG Initiative was initially launched in 2023 as a direct response to the economic challenges posed by the removal of petrol subsidies. Its primary objective was to provide Nigerians with a viable and cleaner alternative to petrol, thereby mitigating the impact of rising fuel prices. The initiative had set an ambitious target of converting one million vehicles to run on compressed natural gas.
The expansion to include electric vehicles marks a forward-thinking evolution of this initiative. It recognizes that a comprehensive clean mobility strategy requires a diversified approach, catering to different consumer needs and technological advancements. By embracing both CNG and EVs, Nigeria is positioning itself to be a leader in sustainable transportation solutions within Africa, capitalizing on its natural resources while also adopting cutting-edge electric mobility technologies. The success of PiCNG & EV will be a key indicator of Nigeria’s progress towards a greener and more economically resilient transportation landscape.
