Residents Urge Aiyedatiwa: Revive Abandoned World Bank Projects

Yaba Community Appeals for Intervention on Abandoned World Bank-Funded Projects

Residents of the Yaba Community in Odode Idanre, within the Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State, have issued a heartfelt appeal to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, urging his immediate intervention to revive several critical projects that have been left in limbo. These vital initiatives, which include projects funded by the World Bank through the Ondo State Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Projects, were reportedly initiated with significant promise but have since ground to a halt.

The community’s concerns have been formally conveyed to the governor through a detailed petition. This petition bears the joint signatures of prominent community leaders: Chief Adegoke Boluwaji, the Head of Yaba Community; Elder Fola Adeghate, the General Chairman of the Yaba Administrative Committee; and Olagidi Akinyode, the Secretary of the Yaba Market Development Committee, all acting on behalf of the Yaba residents.

The petition highlights that these projects, collectively valued in the billions of naira, were officially launched by the governor in early 2024. However, their progress was abruptly halted due to an intractable dispute over contractor appointments. This disagreement has led to the complete abandonment of key infrastructure, leaving the community in a state of disappointment and hindering its potential for economic growth.

Critical Projects Left Unfinished

The abandoned projects specifically cited in the petition include:

  • Odode-Bajare Road: This road, crucial for local transportation, is currently impassable.
  • Ojota Ala Road: Similar to the Odode-Bajare Road, this route is also in a state of disrepair, severely impeding the movement of people and the transportation of goods.
  • World Bank Market at Yaba/Ojotu: This market, intended to be a hub for local commerce, remains stalled.

The petition paints a stark picture of the current situation: “Currently, the Odode-Bajare Road and Ojota-Ala Road are impassable, severely affecting the movement of people and goods. The market project remains stalled due to unresolved contractor disputes. The community’s hope for development and improved livelihoods has been dashed.”

The residents emphasize the gravity of the situation, particularly given the involvement of World Bank funding. They express dismay that such a significant, internationally supported initiative has been jeopardized by internal conflicts. “This situation is unacceptable, especially for a World Bank-funded initiative entrusted to the Ondo State Government. It undermines public confidence and jeopardises the welfare of thousands of residents,” the petition states.

Disruption of Development Efforts

The community had initially been buoyed by the commencement of these projects. “We were encouraged when Your Excellency flagged off the Bajare Road project on August 15, 2024, and work commenced promptly on the Ojota-Ala Road,” the petition recalls. “Similarly, the market project began with site mobilisation and block moulding activities.”

However, the market project experienced a particularly disruptive turn of events. The petition details how, “the market project was abruptly disrupted when another group arrived at the site, claiming ownership of the contract and forcefully removing the original contractor. This conflict has led to the complete abandonment of the market, despite the scheduled commencement of full construction in February 2024.” This unresolved dispute has effectively brought all construction activities for the market to a standstill.

A Call for Governor’s Action

In light of these setbacks, the concerned residents are imploring Governor Aiyedatiwa to take decisive action. They have specifically requested the governor to:

  • Visit Project Sites: To personally assess the extent of the abandonment and the current state of the stalled projects.
  • Resolve Contractor Disputes: To mediate and find a swift resolution to the conflicts surrounding contractor appointments.
  • Ensure Project Resumption: To facilitate the return of the rightful contractors to resume work without further delay.
  • Re-mobilise Construction Teams: To ensure that construction teams are adequately resourced and deployed to complete both the road and market projects.
  • Establish a Monitoring Committee: To foster transparency and accountability in the project execution process moving forward.

The community articulates its enduring hope: “We remain hopeful that your intervention will restore progress and dignity to our community.”

Official Response and Assurances

In response to the community’s appeal, Mr. Allen Sowore, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Strategic Communications, has assured that the matter will be brought to the governor’s immediate attention. He conveyed the governor’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that no project within the state is left unfinished.

“The governor has consistently assured that no project in the state will be abandoned, and this situation will not be an exception,” Sowore stated. “I can confidently assure you that this complaint will be brought to his attention, and all attendant challenges will be promptly addressed. The community should, therefore, remain assured.” This response offers a ray of hope that the stalled projects may soon see the light of day, revitalizing the Yaba Community and fulfilling the promises of development and improved livelihoods.
