Alleged “Philippine Drug Kingpin” Tested Positive for Methamphetamine

A man identified as Park Wang-yeol, reportedly a major drug distributor operating from within a Philippine prison, has tested positive for methamphetamine in a preliminary drug test. Park is currently serving a sentence in the Philippines for murder charges. The Gyeonggi Bukbu Provincial Police Agency’s Metropolitan Crime Investigation Unit confirmed the positive result on the 27th, stating that a urine reagent test indicated the presence of the illicit substance.

During the ongoing investigation, Park has reportedly admitted to using methamphetamine. Authorities are awaiting further confirmation from a detailed forensic examination requested from the National Forensic Service.

Park is at the center of allegations involving the large-scale smuggling and distribution of methamphetamine within South Korea. The charges against him are extensive, spanning multiple alleged importations and distribution networks.

Key Allegations Against Park Wang-yeol:

• June 2024 Methamphetamine Smuggling: While imprisoned in the Philippines, Park is accused of instructing an accomplice to smuggle 1.5 kilograms of methamphetamine into South Korea. The drugs were reportedly concealed within coffee packets and brought through Incheon Airport.
• July 2024 Methamphetamine Importation: In a separate incident in July of the same year, Park is alleged to have orchestrated the importation of an additional 3.1 kilograms of methamphetamine. These drugs were reportedly brought from South Africa and entered South Korea via Gimhae Airport.
• Domestic Drug Distribution: Beyond importation, Park faces charges related to the domestic sale of drugs. It is alleged that from November 2019 to 2020, he collaborated with accomplices to distribute narcotics in key metropolitan areas, including Seoul, Busan, and Daegu.

The gravity of these accusations has led the police to seek a pre-arrest warrant for Park. The warrant application was filed the previous day. A substantive review of the warrant, involving a suspect interrogation, is scheduled to take place at the Uijeongbu District Court today at 10:30 a.m. The court’s decision regarding Park’s detention is anticipated to be announced later this afternoon.
