Just a few months ago, KRC Genk winger Yira Collins Sor found himself glued to the television, passionately cheering on the Nigerian national football team during the Africa Cup of Nations. The roar of the crowd, the tension of crucial matches – he experienced it all as a fervent supporter from afar. Little did he know that the dream of donning the iconic green and white jersey would materialize so swiftly. Sor has now described his maiden call-up to the Super Eagles as a profound shock, a testament to the unpredictable and exhilarating nature of professional football.
Currently immersed in the team’s camp in Antalya, Turkey, Sor is preparing for upcoming friendly encounters against Iran and Jordan. The weight of representing a nation of over 200 million people is not lost on him. “It was really a shock for me to be very honest, but thank God for everything,” Sor shared, his voice filled with a mixture of awe and humility. “To represent Nigeria, over more than 200 million people, is something I really see to be an honour. It’s a privilege that I must not take for granted, and I have to push to the maximum.”
The 24-year-old Belgian Pro League standout reflected on the rapid ascent of his career. The emotional rollercoaster of watching his compatriots battle it out on the continental stage has now transformed into the exhilarating reality of being part of the squad. “Just two months ago, in the AFCON, I was watching the team on the television, and I was nervous. Every game they played, I was supporting the team, and two months later, I got a call-up to join this squad,” Sor recounted, still seemingly processing the swift turn of events.
Sor is eager to contribute his unique skillset to the Super Eagles’ attacking prowess. He identifies himself as a direct and dynamic forward, a player who leverages blistering speed and intelligent combination play to destabilize opposition defenses. “I am a player with a lot of pace and a player that loves the link-up play. So I hope I can give this to the team, and together we can achieve more,” he stated, outlining his ambition to seamlessly integrate into the team’s tactical framework.
His inclusion signifies a deliberate strategy by coach Jose Peseiro to expand the Super Eagles’ attacking options and inject fresh, youthful energy into the squad. This move is particularly crucial as Nigeria gears up for the next series of competitive fixtures. Sor’s presence is not entirely without prior international experience at the youth level, having previously represented Nigeria at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup, an experience that undoubtedly honed his skills on the global stage.
Sor joins a cohort of new faces in the current squad, including fellow debutants Emmanuel Fernandez and Philip Otele. This infusion of young talent aims to complement the experience of seasoned veterans such as captain Wilfred Ndidi, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and Ademola Lookman, creating a dynamic blend of youth and experience that could define Nigeria’s future on the footballing landscape.
The Super Eagles are scheduled to face Iran on Friday at 4 PM Nigerian time. This will be followed by a clash against Jordan on Tuesday, March 31. Both matches are set to take place in Antalya, Turkey. The venue change from Amman, Jordan, was necessitated by prevailing security concerns, ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants in these international friendlies. The move to Antalya provides a neutral ground for these encounters, allowing the teams to focus on the football and Sor to continue his remarkable journey from the stands to the pitch.
